Other Epoxy resin contact to skin

I have been working with a lot of epoxy resin here lately and learned today that you can get some nasty burns/reactions from it contacting your ski during the curing process. I am lucky that it has not happened to me, i must not be sensitive to it but a guy i work with cant let it touch his skin. He said that when he was younger he had a bunch of epoxy cure on his arm and ever since then he has been extremely sensitive to it.

I myself have never worn gloves when working with it. I just wipe it off and wash my hands afterwards. Im wondering how careful you guys are and if you have had any problems with it coming in contact with your skin.

It's pretty simple and cheap to wear disposable latex or vinyl gloves.

I've had epoxy cure on my arm/hand and had no affect on me for years.
As a matter of fact, I kinda of enjoy it :0

When I was sanding/scrubbing my footholds it rubbed the tip of my finger raw and the acetone cause it to burn and go numb for a while

Its polyester or vinylester resin you have to worry about.

Check the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) from the epoxy supplier.

Wear gloves dude, epoxy ,polyester is not good for you at all. I work with it every day and am always wearing gloves.

Epoxy burns me if I let it sit on my skin for any amount of time, even before it pops. If I get it on me, I immediately clean it off. It's more like an allergic reaction than a chemical burn.

After reading the MSDS for both west marine 105 epoxy and 206 hardener i have decided to start wearing gloves and being more careful. Its not the epoxy you have to worry about, its hardly harmful... its the hardener thats corrosive and can also cause lung damage.

Epoxy is toxic. I ware or gloves EVERY time. Also ware a mask and use a fine micron bag in a shop vac when sanding. Minimize your exposure folks it's cheap and safe insurance.


I have heard it said the only differance between epoxy and poly resin is that you know poly is killing you..... Epoxy just does it with less odor.

I wear nitrite gloves always, and a dual breather mask while sanding or grinding glass. My theory is that I know how the fiberglass dust can irritate my skin, I can't imagine it's doing anything good in my lungs.

The gloves are really just to make clean up easier, but it's good to know I'm doing the right thing. Even if its for the wrong reason.

I've been wearing the $40 multi purpose mask from home depot with the dual filters. It feels like I am breathing clean air and I can't smell any of the odors. Is there something else reasonable in price I should be using instead?

I might be mistaken, but I think the MSDS will tell you what type of filter will be effective.

as long as it has some purple on the label
it is a HEPA filter and is good to remove particulates like FG dust, etc
the dual part is the added organic vapor carteidge that gets out the
epoxy fumes and solvents. you should be good to go.

Getting some on you is not going to kill you, but most epoxy's contain phenol and dimethoxybenzidine....both known carcinogens. Add in a ton of other nasty chemicals and its probably not a bad idea to try to keep it off you if you can avoid it. Nitrile gloves are cheap at HF, and good ventilation isnt a bad idea.
