Anyone know a good full face helmet that looks good? Something that has removable lining of course and light. Also any recommended boots? shin pads? knee pads? anything additional that is helpful?
If anyone has a good setup list on what they wear when they ride just post it here. (surf or flat)

thanks

Sorru to say this, but; have you tried the search function? These topics have been covered well.
But I'd say downhill or lacross helmet, downhill knee-/shinpads and NRS workboots is what I wear.

a full face helmet has an opening that's just the right size for the handlebars to go through, it is commonly agreed that lacrosse helmets are the best for our riding.

Shoes include wrestling shoes or I'd like to try some converse high-tops sometime.

Other than that a good life jacket and a mind towards what you are doing and you should be fine.

Welcome to X. As mentioned there are many threads covering this but the search function can be less than effective, especially for new members. Most Surf riders wear some sort of down hill bike helmet due to the light weight and good overall protection. There are many choices for helmets but the most popular is the Bell Bellistic. I personally think a Lacrosse helmet is a bit of an over kill. Taking a handlebar to the face is possible but the chances are pretty slim, especially if you obey the golden rule of surf riding which is “Never let go.” It’s kind of hard for the bar to go thru your helmet opening if your hand is still connected to it. Shin and knee pads are generally not necessary also

As for shoes the majority census seems to go with the Asics wrestling shoes. I personally prefer wearing a 2 mil wetsuit under sock and All Star high tops for ankle support. You can pick up a 2mil “fin sock” for around $15 at any surf shop in the body board section and I actually wear Walmarts All Star knock offs. They go for around $15 also and last longer than the real thing. Read the sticky thread on the top of the main page for shoe options

Good luck and welcome to the addiction

if you set up your boat properly with a shorted stear plate and straight bars, they wont protrude past the chin pad.
Also i've never seen someone hold their pole up near their head while riding.

If you hit your pole on the way down, youll be hitting your pad.

Get yourself a Downhill M/B helmet, 661 helmets look good and a pretty cheap. I however live by the rule $10 helmet - $10 head. I run a troy lee designs D3 which are around $300.

Run a shoe that is a shoe/boot, do not run booties they dont offer support for ankles / broken toes.

227 has it dialed. I ride flat mostly and use asics shoes with (high) 2 mil booties inside year round, bell bellistic helmet, asics soccer shin pads $10. I used to not wear shin pads til I had a (HUGE) goose egg on my shin early last summer (happy it didn't open up and need stitches). So now I don't care what peeps say. I wear shin pads, and they work. Spending a couple bucks on protective gear is a lot cheaper than a trip to the ER. Welcome to the X!

This is what happens when your chin hits the handlepole and misses the pad (Could have used a stitch but used a steri-strip instead), It was a DEEEEEP cut and I hit the front face of my handlepole which is as blunt as a baseball bat.

i think any helmet would work just have to factor in the weight when water soaks into the padding. and shoes anything that covers your ankles. right now i am using the nike 6.0 wake skate shoes they have a lot of padding and comfort

I wear the Giro full face mtn bike helmets that you can get at Blowsion. I really like how little water they soak up, being light weight while riding, but also how well they breathe and feel. They are warmer and more protective than no helmet and not super heavy or obscuring your vision. I don't want it any other way.

I've had good luck with a bellistic. Had my ski land on my head a couple times, smashed chin piece on my ac pole, landed on my head in about 4 feet of water, and recently had manfish66's rear tailgate window deal fall on my head.... That and a pair of allstar chucks with neoprene booties and life is good...
