2 cents, i actually talked with Ed B over the phone when i bought my FS 49 AVLRs he said i did not need separate fuel pump. But maybe he's mind changed over the past 3 years :)
another "advantage" from external pump, is the possibility of one of the internal fuel pumps fail and lean seize one cylinder.

I have noticed some running dual external on the new thrust/maxx 50 mm carbs, think it helps with atomonizing the fuel as they a anual discharge. Talk too guy last Night that could take 50 mm maxx over FS 49, he ran them from 900-1200 cc dasa engins.

I prefer the big mikuni pump mounted high on the tank with stock return ports in the carbs. Any boat that gets a lot of full throttle gets an additional pump feeding an air separator ahead of the carb pump.

The difference is the pressure/volume at idle/low speed. The independent pumps have very low output at idle. On thirsty, responsive engines, the external pump has an advantage in throttle response off idle.
That said, I've tested both ways on my 1105 and seen very little difference. I personally like the cleaner setup of carb mounted pumps.
