First Freestyle Build - Couple Questions

I’ve ordered a Roid hull

I’ve collected a bunch of parts for the build. I have a couple questions though.

I bought an XScream XS900RR motor and Superfreak carbon lay down exhaust with waterbox from a member here. This is my first lay down pipe so I’m wondering what the best way to run cooling is. I have a Thrust billet 155 magpump with dual 1/2” cooling fittings. The exhaust manifold has dual 3/8” fittings and an jet type water adjustment for the chamber. The head has dual 1/2” water fittings.

With all that said, do I run dual 1/2” water lines from the pump to the manifold, then out from the head to the pissers? Seems very simple compared to having B pipes in the past.

Should I run a water filter on each of the water lines at/near the bulkhead? This package came with 1 water filter so I have no idea how it was run before.

Got rid of the water box.lt isn’t big enough and will let water back in the engine.How do l know,l owned the same pipe and w/box a few years ago.

Use the water stainer in-line and before your jets filter if you ride water with sediments or sand or just want the extra protection the strainer provides...

That hump coupler on manifold, I trim the manifold side Of the coupler so the couplers hump is over the manifolds hump and allows the chamber hump to but up to manifold...

Jetmaniac sells a taller water box for wet pipe you should look at....

Like Sanoman mentioned, small short boxes put the chambers outlet low in the hull and let water back flow into rear cylinder...

I run a small RRP box but I replaced it’s outlet pipe to allow me to raise the box with foam under it and get the pipe chamber outlet well above the hulls “water line with ski floating at rest”

I have 3 to 4 inches of foam under the water box and that put the outlet pipe of water box heading straight at the carbs on my particulate engine. This alignment issue is why I replaced the outlet pipe, to clear the carbs....

With that small carbon box you’d not have that ability if alignment was an issue....
 
I know it's the boring default answer on all of these threads and it's no fun, but I'll say it....get ahold of Xscream, do what they say to do with the motor. I haven't had a ton of interaction with Xscream but the little bit I have had they were super helpful.

It's fun to learn and try stuff yourself I understand that as well as anybody, I have two skis, one I did EVERYTHING myself including the porting, the other has a motor from a well known builder and I followed his instructions for setup in every way, that includes getting the pipe he recommended and the carbs he recommended.

With all of that said, the default most common way to run cooling on a wet lay down pipe is to run the two lines from the pump to the manifold, T one of them off and run it through a strainer then T it again and run it to the spray bar and the stinger. Sometimes people run the cooling backward (into head first), sometimes they T both lines and use two filters or strainers. Sometimes they use warm "after the motor" water for the stinger. If I were you I'd do what Xscream says to do, but brace yourself they might say you should get a powerfactor.
 
Thanks for all the good info. I suppose I should figure out the water box situation before mocking up the hull for UFO mounts and everything. I’ll call Xscream regarding their recommended waterbox and cooling setup. I see now how the previous owner had this package run. T’d out of the strainer to the top manifold fitting and the spray bar. Makes sense. I will definitely ask them if that is preferable or not.
 
Ordered the power factor water box per your suggestions. Funny how building a ski spirals out of control financially. Should’ve just bought complete. Haha. Even buying used parts when available this is gonna be over budget. Don’t tell my wife. I’ll soften the blow with time.

I think storbeck was saying Xcream may want you to get a complete power factor exhaust system ?

Have you looked at the Jetmaniac water box for lay down pipe ? It’s nice and has water fitting bung fir cooling water., 3rd box down the page

I think a few people were saying to get some sort of other water box, but you're right I have no idea what he should do I was just suggesting get ahold of xscream and do what they say, and there's a pretty good chance they'll say get a complete powerfactor, but I dunno.

The carbon pipe is pretty awesome for what that's worth.

OK, what’s the benefit of running a spray bar in the waterbox like the JetManiac box?

The PFP box I ordered is on Backorder so I have time to decide. XScream didn’t really have a suggestion since they were unfamiliar with the Superfreak pipe. Blowsion doesn’t really have a box suggestion because they say a lot of water boxes allow water to back fill to the engine.

That will keep the carbon pipe from getting too hot and actually delaminating on the inside of it.lt is also used to tune the pipe for your set up.
You would want to turn the spray bar in the direction of the pipe to keep it cooler.l used several different size jets till l found the best for my tune.

You may also try to get a hold of Phil Clemmons in Va. to see if he has any water boxes.

Yes, first off the power factor water box is largely baffled inside and designed for a dry pipe, the boxes cooling water comes from a barbed hose fitting at the stinger end of the pipe.....

The carbon RRP Pipe for example uses an open non baffled water box and get cooling water from a bung welded to the box that you add a barbed water fitting to and run cooling line to the box....

No spray bar is used on the box, i use a inline restricter and a flow control valve before the bung as a secondary pipe tuning point.. you can tune the response some and the noise level and the water box temp via this bung...

I haven’t seen the baffling in the Jetmaniac water box but he lists it for lay down RRP wet pipe and Another member I know already ran the Jetmaniac box with a carbon RRP pipe and It worked well and took care of water back flow, and has the bung for the cooling water line....

Years ago I had the back flow water problem too, I first considered running the power factor box, but when I asked a well known builder about running it with my carbon pipe they were completely against it....

Also you may want to measure your pipes stinger diam and compare to it to the water box inlet bung diam to see if you need and reducer coupler hose..... your pipe looks real wide, it doesn’t hook back on itself by the water box (form a J) shape, if you have fitment issues you might run a 30 degree hose off the stinger to kick the water box over towards the carbs some....

Sanoman might be able comment on how The pipe in general fit his hull.

Also the Roids seem real wide so that’s in your favor

So you understand dry verses wet, dry pipes have an outer water jacket surrounding the pipe with cooling water flowing thru that outer layer to cool the pipe....

Wet pipes have no cooling water jacket built in or water fittings on the pipe and use water injected at the manifold outlet like you have there, with a spray bar injecting water into the pipe to cool it....
 
It's not dry. That brass fitting right before the coupler with the mikuni jet in it sprays water into the chamber.
Yeah, sorry. I meant that there is no bung in the stinger like the RRP or PFP lay down pipes. So I guess I would run a T in a water line from the head through a flow control valve into the waterbox that I get, right?

Correct, so the bung is part of the waterbox instead. Or if you spray enough water into the sprayer on the manifold you may not need water going to the bung. Look up the instructions for an RRP pipe and that should give you a good idea on how to hook everything up.
