FIRST FREESTYLE SKI TRIXSTAR OR BRAWLER

Hey guys, Finally looking to get into the world of flatwater skis. I only have lakes local to me so that is my primary style of riding. Oregon is 12 hours away so I would love to make the trip down twice a year and ride surf.

My budget right now is only going to allow for something with a 701cc configuration, I know this will be a lot of work to flip and roll but I am up for the challenge.

Here are the 2 skis I am looking at if you guys could give me some advice.

2017 Trixstar S Full carbon
701cc, msd, piped
144mm

How will something like this fair in the surf? will this be problematic
I would love to go with the Trixstar, Chad the guy who builds them in Canada is excellent to deal with
Has anyone had experience on the trixstars, how flipable are they etc

Brawler Ski by Twangled
Not sure what year but older
Fibreglass build
780cc ported motor
Msd, all extra bolt ons
148mm PUMP
I am not familiar with the brawlers at all, and there is not much info I can find on them, I guess they evolved into the HAVOC? Which I am familiar with.
>How would one of these fair for flipping vs the Trixstar, oviously it would be heavier

Thanks Guys!

FYI please don't bug me about my budget or give me the speal about needing to spend more and get a better motor, this is just to get my foot in the door and see if this is something I want to pursue further, before I go liquidate all my belongings to buy a motor

From a Quality Standpoint along. Trixstar hands down. Chads work is phenomenal. But keep in mind, it is a flat water boat. These type of ski's are not designed or intended as surf ski's. That does not mean you cannot ride them in the surf. They are just more geared towards flatwater tricks. The fit and finish of the other is not in the same league as the Trixstar.

A trixtar and a brawler ride extremely different. If at all possible I would go and ride either. As a beginner you wont know the pros and cons of a hull by just riding one. I love the way the trixtars look and wanted to one until I rode one. Im not a fan of how either of your listed hulls ride. If your budget is for a 701 RTR I would hold off for something like a backie chan or phantom. Great beginner hulls and ride awesome with small power.

I would love a backie chan, I missed one locally
Basically all I want is a 701cc that can flip as high as this backie chan ---->

The only am ski I have riden is BOB Gen 2, And it was having bogging issues, so it wouldn't even get onto plain. Other than that I was a sn 701 with some minor hull mods and lots of bolt ons.

What didn't you like about the trixstar ride wise? seems like a longer ski which might suit me better im 6'3, the brawler looks extremely short. I even found an EME micro a while back but it sold

Thanks for the reply, ya I agree chads work looks flawless. I definitely don't expect it to ride the best in the surf, I am just not sure what options I have in my budget that can do surf and flatwater with a 701. I did get offered a tigercraft aqubot 1 with a 760cc in it (fibreglass), that is the perfect surf ski but doubt it will get upside down off set up wake.

Cant go wrong buying a trixstar directly from chad! Local support for a ski like that is extremely important in my opinion. As a fellow Canadian I think you're better off buying a ski built and designed by some one local who can help you if you have issues or even have him fully build it for you!

You skip out on duty and shipping buying it local too! My local riding buddy is building one now.

I have never ridden a Trixtar in the surf, but I have ridden a couple flatwater. I think they would actually make a pretty good occasional surf hull or for something like lake surf.

Get the bob gen2 for cheap and fix it up. Does good enough as a surf hull to have fun and flip. SN is also a great surf hull and leave the bob as your flatwater ski. Another cheap ski to look into is the waterdawg. I believe @Jetfiend has a great deal on one right now.

whats your budget man?
It would 1000x rater spend money on a good hull, and ride a stock 62t 701.
Than a hull you dont like, with a bigger engine.
Is it possible for you to try diffrent hulls? I like one type hull, Brian likes a diffrent and you might like a third - hense you should not nessecarly buy what everyone think is good.

Hey guys thanks for all the responses. My budget is 10k canadian
But to throw a curve ball to all your responses, I have been offered another ski for 14k Canadian that I think I am going to try stretch for
2013 backie chan
Glass hull - so I can ride the surf with it
900ss xscream motor - more than enough to flatwater trick and flip
rpp pole
xscream trim
144mm - can upgrade to a 155 with this hull

apparently the whole ski and motor have 20 hrs on them

I am still leaning towards the trixstar because it is a carbon hull, and is local, but I do have reservations about taking the trixstar into the crazy
oregon surf. But if I can stretch another 4k out of my budget right now and get into a ready built freestyle ski? might be a good option

any opinions on backie chans?

How was the carbon out in the surf? have you ever had to repair carbon etc?

Went with the glass chan with the xscream 900ss in it :)

Sold the sleds and dirtbike to up my budget but I am so excited about it, cant wait to get it in the water! I already feel the extra sacrafice was worth it to get what I want, a bigger motor and glass hull, flatwater ready and I can take it in the surf.

As much as I would love a trixstar full carbon and beautiful build quality I think this was the right choice for my first ski

Thanks for all the help guys!
