first ride, had some problems...

finally took the Sj out and laughed when i got in the water. i took my wetsuit and boots but didnt need them at all.. it was surprisingly warm.

Right away the ski felt a lot more unbalanced than i remember it. when its just sitting in the water the right side rail is underwater. when i lift the battery out it sits even. its a jetworx gel cell, and i knew that thing felt heavy as hell. what can i do for this? I took the fire extinguisher out and it helped some, but then im not legal.

After riding for about 20-30 min. it started running like crap. when i gunned it, it would just sorta hesitate and bog down a little. but if i just blipped the throttle it worked fine.. Im gonna change the plugs and check the CDI for water. Anything else to check? compression is at 162 in each cylinder.
Im going to florida on wednesday, so i really need to figure this out fast.

hrmm. also, i noticed my pissers shot out some black gunk. wonder what that was?

Was it black residue or sludge? A little bit of black colored water is perfectly normal. That happened to my blaster all the time and would stain the side of the hull and I would have to always clean it.

if i had a kart tank i could probably do that. i just felt really uncomfortable out there. Ive only ridden it maybe 5-6 times, but i dont remember it being like this. I made the exhaust from the pipe ---> waterbox ---> back wall myself. and i had to move the tank back an inch or so to clear the pipe. maybe i messed up the weight distribution.

I hate to say it, but im considering selling this and waiting until i can afford a nice RN. Ive had my SN for about 8 months and Im already tired of working on it and missing my old trusty 550 that i could actually do some tricks on.

it was sludge i guess, kinda sticky gunk that stuck to the side and hull. i thought it might just be some buildup from not running it for several months...

I didnt want to spend a couple hundred for the appropriate pipes (and it has a riva red pipe on it so i didnt know if the OEM would even work), so i made it out of car exhaust tubing (2" i think) to the waterbox. from the waterbox to the "firewall" i used an old 550 filler hose (connects from gas cap to tank) and a silicon connector from a FMIC to connect to what was left of the original hose. the 550 filler hose was to stiff to flex around the gas tank so i moved it back and therefore the battery tray back about an inch.

The Riva pipe is lighter and this will cause a slight imbalance. Brand new skis do this.

wow, thanks. makes me feel better about it. Im gonna try to ride as much as possible tomorrow, but if that hesitation doesnt go away, i probably wont take it to florida. If i cant do much on flatwater, riding in the ocean is going to be even worse...

i forgot about that. i did mix it pretty lean (around 48:1), that could be it. Ill mix it at about 36:1 tomorrow and see if it helps. Ill go pull the plugs right now.

See i keep pretending to be a mechanic, and im starting to think that just causes more problems.

Yes I'm talking about Jetting, Air/fiel mixture. Lean hesitations don't usually show up until everything gets warmed up.
