Flywheel Cover: Yamabond 4 and Paper Gasket or Paper Gasket Alone

The reason I ask if that I just took out the Chinese stator and put the oem orig back in and am about to put the cover on.

And the oem paper gasket which I believe is manufcturers original has a thin line of gray liquid gasket stuff on both sides (dry now) which looks too thin and even to have been applied by anyone but the factory.

I filled the engine compartment up with water to about 6 inches last Saturday to check for leaks at the intermediate shaft.

Tonight when I took the flywheel cover off, water had definitely intruded. White aluminum oxide had already started growing. And there were a few droplets still in there.,

That thin line of sealer on the oem gasket is an American patent called Print-o seal. If that gasket still looks good you could probably reuse it even without additional sealer. Permatex " High Tack" in a brush top can- not the aerosol- is an excellent gasket sealer. Water can also get to the stator through the starter opening. You might consider applying a generous circular bead of RTV where the starter front housing meets the crankcase- of course the starter needs to be removed for that.

Thank you augustaf ! I have Yamabond 4 so I am going with it for now. But I will order some Permatex High Tack in the brush top can for next time.

works well on pipe threads too! Some automotive jobbers such as NAPA stock it.

I do a little yamabond on the engine side of the flywheel cover. Best thing is to make sure the bolts are all torqued the same.

Thanks Qiunc and augustaf I put a little thin line of Yamabond 4 on both sides of the paper gasket and hand tightened the flywheel bolts. I was disappointed that the Yamaha Fx-2 FX700 Super Jet SJ700 1994-1995 Service Manual did not give a torque spec for the little flywheel bolts. Maybe it is in a general chapter on torque specifications by bolt size but the Yamabond 4 was wet and I wanted to get the flywheel on.

I use a thin layer of waterproof grease on each side of the gasket. Torque to 7ft*lb

It is on the spec page. For general 6mm bolts. But like be_lain said it is very low.
