foothold location vs poll length?

:wave:I am tearing my ski down getting ready to cut my stock pole and put my WDK holds in. My question is with the pole stock length I ride pretty far back,my heels are right at the start of the kick tail. I am most likely going to be cutting my pole 3 inches. So am I going to be riding a little closer to the dash with a shorter pole? I am short about 5'8"ish if that makes a difference, or should I install the holds where I ride now?

Also does any one have good pics of WDK with the inclosers? I cant decide if I want to install them or not. I cant figure out how they are supposed to be installed. :stooges: They just dont look like they will fit. :dunno:

Thanks in advance I am hoping to start cutting tomorrow.:cheer:

my footholds on all of the ski i have built have been all the way back and i have a -4 pole and the wdk foot holds you just have to cut to fit thats how i did them.

Thanks, I also forgot if there is any one near austin that wants to help at night with my build, my fridge is full of your favorite beer(just need to know in advance what it is). I just realized I only have 7 weekends before the Lone Star ride to get this done.:1zhelp:

I've been wondering the same thing, I'm 5' 7" and have cut the pole about 1" and then run I believe a total of a -3.5" steering setup, straight bars. Not sure if I like it or not, feels like I'm reaching and my back is killing me, and when trying to hit setup wakes, I end up almost subbing. I only tried that setup once before I left, and was wondering other peoples opinions that are "short" like me :shooter3:. I have Rev's in my FX-1, they are big and there almost as far back as you can go. I decided against the enclosures because I didn't want to feel trapped, plus, when riding surf style, my toes fit in the front part of the hold just fine.

Torpedo's template was very helpful for installing the Rev's.

im about 5'10" and LOVED my -5(between short poll and steering) setup. my footholds were all the way to the back of the tray. noone said freestyle was comfortable. but the extra 3" I cut out of the poll definatly helped me roll plate to plate.

Everything is personal preferance. If you dont feel comfortable doing it, just install the holds. ride like that for a while... then cut the pole if you feel you might like it. building a complete freestle ski without seeing if you like something first or being able to tell the difference that one mod did compared to the other is crazy if you havent gotten used to riding a semi stock ski with footholds. just my opinion.

I would place the holds as far forward as easily done, dent the exhaust tube slightly, or mod the foothold a bit.

I had 24/7's in my square all the way back and a -3" roundnose pole and I was reaching like a mofo. Not again!

Stuffing the holds up as far as I can with mods and running a -6.5" overall Xmetal setup.

I'm 5'8"

Inclosures on WDK's?

No one has responded to the enclosure part of his question? It must be alot harder to turf? I'm interested in the same set up for

my 07 RN. Haven't done anything yet - but I'm interested in the same question - I've heard a few guy say that the holds to the

back- causes back strain? I'm 6'3" with ape arms so I don't think its going to be major issue - Have never riden ski with footholds -

though but I find stock pole way to long compared to my old 650sx. Thinking of 3" cut with maybe modified steering plate/0

degree bars.

But undecided on what type of footholds to use?

I HATE holds with enclosures! To me they just get in the way way to much for surf riding.... There great when your locked in... but suck for everything else. I can flip, and role just fine without enclosures.

Same issue here guys.................

5'6", 26" inseam (short legs)......................

Cut the stock pole 3 1/4", and have a -1" turnplate. No holds yet, but normally ride with my front foot at the front of the tray as far as it will go. Riding other skis with holds in the back and -2 poles and -2 steering still feels like I am leaned over way too far...............Doing holds this weekend and am wondering the same thing...can I move them up some.

The ski handles so much better with the short pole I am too scared to go back to a long one, but know I will be uncomfortable with it short and holds in the traditional location.:ugh:

Guys, put your footholds all the way back, and ease off on the super short poles until you're used to the position. It feels weird to start with, but it puts you in the correct position for many freestyle moves when you have your feet at the back and your weight forward. As you get into it you're going to want your pole shorter and shorter (up to a point - you can get too short). Think about how much easier it is to change a turn plate than move footholds....

I'm 5'9, ride with footholds ALL the way back, and have a -2" pole, with straight bars, and the shortened X-Metal turn plate. I hated it when I first rode it - killed my back and messed up my riding. Now I'm used to it I actually have to make a conscious effort to do a nose stab, otherwise I get so much rotation I'm straight into a roll. It's awesome! Now I'm ready to go an inch or two shorter.

Don't mess up the footholds putting them forward - you'll regret it fairly quickly.

Started cutting last night, holds all the way back. Got to cut the other side tonight. Thanks for the replies.

My WDK Revs have a lip on the bottom,do I want to trim that off and be flat with the tray?

Most definitely YES !

I didn't do it on mine thinking that I can even it out with padding. It worked at first but as the padding compacted I begun to feel the lip under foot more and more. At times it gets so bad (in cold water) that I get some numbness in my feet.
Next time I will make the bottom absolutely flush.
