Foothold recess in hydroturf underpad

I see a lot of people grind/cut a recess into there hydroturf underpad right where their feet go into their footholds. Does it make a difference?
How do you know how deep to make them?

I had done it on one of my skis. Didnt like it and ended up making wedges to put in place. This hull has fixed footholds

Some people do it to help keep their feet from coming out of the holds

I did this recessed foothold areas in this Vision hole.Mostly out of necessity because the holds were low in the tray to start with.Doesn't offer much padding below your feet when you do it this way.l used 18 mil padding on the tray bottom,but only 9mil in the holds.
