I think if you are a beginner, foot holds. Advanced, straps. Newbies tend to bail a lot more often because they get out of shape easier. The straps are a bit more difficult to get out of, but lock you in.
I have visions of people twisting knees and breaking ankles with those fancy little side slaps that you manage to do before you get your nose stabs down. Another good thing about being a beginner and installing footholds is you get a bit of a feel for glassing and turfing so you don't end up with a 2 inch strip of woven glass as reinforcement when you come to it! You get to learn as you go, and enjoy riding for longer because you don't have injuries as a result of a poor landing. Footholds can lock you in pretty well too, but they are a little more forgiving.
