For those who wish to improve their steering...

So does the hole ("A") happen to be the right size for the threaded screw?
Otherwise you'll need to sleeve it or hunt down a special screw, else you'll introduce slop there.

BTW are a lot of you running set up so the cable stops the steering (ie. not hitting the turn plate stop?) Someone should think about fab'ing an adjustable stop on the turn plate if it is not possible to get (/keep) the cables adjusted so you aren't stressing the cable every time you turn full lock.

Not raining in on anyone's parade, but what's the big deal? It's a spherical rod end. That's nothing new to the watercraft or automobile industy. The factory ball and socket joints aren't sloppy if they are lubricated properly.

Lubrication has nothing to do with slop, the factory ends have play in them which gets worse over time.

Hmm. I know I take my factory ends off and pack marine grease in the end. Mine have no slop. Maybe Yamaha had bad quality control at some point.

I'm ordering one right now. My trim binds if the nozzle is turned at all, so I'm hoping this will give me some more 'trimability'.

Yes, and just a regular bolt will go through it to the nozzle (or turnplate, whichever end).

can anyone verify the thread diameter/pitch is correct for the steering cable before I click ORDER? M5 x .8mm?

is there really that much slop in your guys' steering cables?

i just dont see any real significant advantage to this? it is pretty trick tho.

my old steering cables would usually break due to corrosion/age. i imagine if your cables are stretching to the point of significant, excessive slack, theyre probably all frayed up inside and ready to go???

No, it's the ball ends. The balls wear and so does the coupling, so eventually with both ends, you can have some freeplay. I have a brand new cable, but my ends are the original '96 ends so they are kinda worn. I'm going to replace the nozzle end with one of these first to see if that helps my trim binding issue, and if it's nice I'll get the top one also.

This is the crappy yamaha piece that splits open and detaches from the steering cable that part 2988K31 will replace. Does anyone know if this part is standard across the yamaha line? Will the same replacement fit a SJ and a Blaster, and a GP1200?

What ski is that? That end doesn't look anything like my stock ones.

That is the gp1200 end. I answered my own question. The blaster has a spring loaded deal that goes over the ball on the steering nozzle and the superjet does as well so they are not the same. But, the 2988K31 part will work on the GP. I think.

I forgot to answer, but no the 'A' hole is an M5, not M6 like the steering ball ends are. I'm just going to use a stainless M5 bolt anyway, so it doesn't really matter except up on the turnplate.

Just looking into this myself, on the FX1 the ball fitting is a 6mm thread,
so the the 5mm 'A' hole isn't going to work. Have I missed something?
It seems I'd either have to drill out the ball end fitting or tap a new 5mm hole in the turn plate.

Yes and yes. I'm only putting one on right now, on the nozzle end and that's easy since I've modded the nozzle already and the current ball end is bolted on anyway. The turnplate end is a different story and I may just leave it for now.

Thanks. I think I'm first going to just get fresh yamaha parts. Just worked out to ~$40 for both cable ends and both ball studs and new bushings for the nozzle. I'm pretty sure its the cable ends that are worn out more so than the studs by the way.
