Forgot which piston goes where

Like an idiot I forgot which piston went in which hole in my 701. The top end has 2 seasons on it. Should I hone before installing in case they are going in the wrong holes? Do I need new rings or are they fine as long as ring gap checks out? Lastly, if I need to hone, 3 stone or ball type?

Most pistons I have installed are identical in size so typically it doesnt matter. With 2 seasons on them they are sure to be worn down some anyways. Lightly hone it and install new rings and wrist pin bearings at a minimum. If you can afford it replace the entire piston as it wears faster than the steel cylinder. Good luck.

Its always a good idea to have the bore checked with a bore gauge to be certain it is within limits.

Did you remove both the circlips on each piston?
I typically only remove the outer ones when reusing pistons since it’s easier to replace just the outside ones once installed. Might be a clue for which one was front or back.

Walmart cheapo at 40:1.
Sounds like this is a $60 worth of rings mistake. Good, teaches the lesson better haha.

Gas station oil for me. Always ran shell nautilus but they don’t have it anymore so been running penzoil latley. Got hundreds of gallons out of my old motors and the only reason my last one finally let go was a runaway out of the water which was operator error

The easiest and least chance of damage is a ball hone.

Is that 40 spins to 1 stroke or 40 strokes to 1 spin of the hone?

To get the proper cross hatch I would say 40 spins to one stroke unless you are going to run synthetic oil then 50:1,LOL
