fountain question

Sorry for the newbie question, but I'm still a newbie on the superjet so here it goes....

When doing fountains with a stock sj how much water is usually drawn into the engine compartment? I have the 3 round holes in the front ducktaped closed.

When I do a fountain it seems like the ski will do the fountain, but then start to want to stall... maybe lack of air? I don't think I'm getting water in the carbs or anything....I am careful not to hold the fountain very long, but I thought you should be able to fountain for more than 2-4 seconds.... that is when my engine starts to want to cut out...

Is there a way to make the engine compartment more water tight than I already have it other than getting an aftermarket hood/nose piece?

I seem to get somewhere between .25 and 1 gallon of water in my compartment during the fountains just as a rough estimate on how much water is pumped out afterwards. Is this pretty normal for stock setup?

An after market hood still lets in plenty of water if not more. XFT hoods let in water like a funnel. Just make sure you have a good hood seal and make sure the hood it properly aligned on the seal.

Sounds normal I like to keep the rear air holes above the water while doing a fountain and with a proper hood seal you can do them for quite some time if the front holes are plugged.

Yeah, I was trying to keep those rear air holes above too... As far as my ski's tendancy to begin to stall mid-fountatin....I wonder if my ski was too vertical and the gas was low enough that it was going to the front leaving the pickups high and dry....

Yes that could happen if you are low on fuel.

The ski won't sputter because of lack of fuel in 2 to 4 seconds at 1/4 throttle. Mark can do them for weeks with a stock hood. An after market hood is no better than a stock hood while the ski is up right but when you lay it on the side after market SUX. If the front holes are blocked and your rear holed are out of the water then you have a carb problem because the ski would run forever with just the rear holes open.

It takes a lot of water for the ski to crap out while you're still doing a fountain. The coupler is at the high point and isn't splashing water around until you remount and ride out. Check the hoodseal and also check under the bondline for cracks. The tape on the front holes might be leaking, you might try fiberglass over them instead. A scupper will get the water out once you take off, but a bilge pump up front is the only way to get water out while you're still doing a fountain.
