Freestyle “laws”

Well let me start off by saying I hate dealing with fwc, dot, atf and basically anything with three letters…. :DJoking

me and my girlfriend were riding our local lake which is in manatee county Florida. Yes we knew at some point we would be stopped since the horsepower limit is 20 ponies. I was born and raised here. I’m stubborn and hate the laws our local Karen’s have made. But I got to talking with the fwc agent which wa s a super nice guy. No tickets no warnings just verbal. We got in the topics of laws on the freestyle skis. I have a xscream kdx 1200 and my lady has a backie Chan that we just finished building. He said that they could consider it reckless and I’d have to pay a big ticket but he said do you research and see what others have to say. What are y’all’s thought on this? If that were the cases I have an expensive yard ornament…. So what are y’all’s thoughts on what’s okay and what’s not.

Another question. My kdx and her backie Chan are both aftermarket hulls which don’t have titles. I know people do some swapping and have there self a nice “superjet kdx” but what would the proper way to get this thing register and not have to worry.

If your skis are both unregistered and crazy loud, you don't have a lot of argument to make unfortunately.
Yes, that’s my first thing I’m taking care of is figuring out how to get them registered. We have “legal” places to ride which is were we will be going. We were at the lake test riding the backie Chan for the first time which is close to the house. My question is more so how to get this registered the legal way and how do you get around the reckless driving

two brothers title, did it with my EME. Cost me $157. You dont need a HIN, it will get assigned one and be 100% legal.

Asking fwc hes gonna give you the by the book answer. We hoon at seminole and never get hassled.

Awesome man! I’ll look them up! How have you been?

Hopefully selling the 550 in the morning and starting my new travel job next week. Other than that, just been in the gym doggy. Gettin outta skis for good. Your girl snagged the backie chan I was after but it worked out better that I didn't buy it.

Correct way is to have them titled and registered in Florida as homemade hulls, not that hard to do.

Riding a boat (ski) without title and registration is illegal in Florida and most states. You have been very lucky so far. They can impound your untitled ski, and it will cost you alot, and may never get it back. They could write you so many expensive tickets for all the laws you are breaking now.

In my opinion, we should all try to follow the normal rules/laws for boating, and have our skis titled, registered, wear legal USCG approved vest, whistle, etc. We should try to be as legit as possible with the above, not hard to do. Then while riding use your head, know the boating laws, and don't needlessly piss off other boaters and lakefront Karens.

If we earn some respect that way, we will hopefully have a little better time later when operating our skis 'recklessly.'

Slap some 20hp Fuel Injection stickers on them, get some water spraying into the exhaust to quiet it down and register as home made.

Insurance doesn't care. They will payout based on declared value. It can be 50 yr old ski. Or a superjet title on a rickter hull. It sunk buddy. Gonezo. Pay me.

The law cares. Around here they wouldn't know any better. But they could take your ski if they found out and wanted to be dicks. It's really easy to do a homebuilt title here. My 16 xfr and 14 evo are both titled as such. I've rode a blaster that has a vxr title for 7 years now. Never had a issue.

Glad I live in a area where the sheriff throws wake for us. Good ol commiefornia according to everyone else

At the afterbay the Sheriff told me I couldn't ride because my current registered stickers where on the wrong side of the CF numbers..

Yeh afterbay I got kicked off for going too fast. Supposedly there is a speed limit for the entire thing. Shasta sheriff also kicked me off the lake for no cf numbers. Dude on a spark doing 500mph by the kids tho was all good.

Tehama county slogan is "recreation unlimited" I can fly a plane. Drive a rzr. Ride a ski. A horse. And shoot a turkey all in the same day. Within 10 miles of each other. Blessed I know.

Anyways register your ski. Either a previous title. Or a homebuilt. They both work fine. Unless you got some nazi water cops where your at. In which case nothing you do is ever going to be good enough

For the reckless thing you could try to research a bit on the Danica Patrick wreckless driving deal she went through. The basics are, years ago she was pulled over for speeding and charged for reckless driving. When it came to court time she provided the judge with her track record, both literal and figuratively speaking, for being an F1 racer. Because she is or maybe was now, an experienced racer she clearly was in full control of her vehicle and not reckless in her driving. The judge if I recall either dropped the charges or reduced them to just speeding. The point is if you can provide proof of being a registered boating enthusiast with skis in your life and in your possession for a good portion of your boating life, it could support your claim that you are not being reckless but rather you have full control of your vessel and have the history and experience to support that claim.

So Mark Gomez can do backflips and get away with it. Us mere mortals? Meh.

Umm nope, that's not at all what I said. Danica is just a reference just like any one of us that know what we're doing when working on skis, our history and experience gives weight to support the claim.

Danica walked mainly because she could afford a good lawyer. Her name may have helped if the judge was a fan.
