freestyle mods

hey everyone
been reading most freestyle threads to newbies and its been of a great help.
I own a 08 stock SJ and about to order the following parts to get the max freestyle experience without spending too much.

here are my questions:
1) many recommend buyin a new bilge pump...whats wrong with yamaha's?
2) will a factory b pipe work well given that i didnt add a cooling system, flame arrestors, or that i didnt port engine /girdled heads?
3) about to drill nozzle.... still need quicksteer?

these are the changes i am making as of now:
prop 12/17
intake grate
factory b pipe
turf
0 deg bars.

thank you in advance...

The stock bilge pump is a venturi type and it's worthless. A bilge pump or two is a wise first add-on.

B-pipe will be good too, but you probably need to re-jet the carbs and a modified cdi or msd enhancer would be a good thing to have to keep you off of the rev limiter.

The nozzle mod is good. Just tap the outer hold on the stock turnplate for now in addition to the nozzle mod.

Also, the stock prop is good...Not sure if I'd change that.

1) You should definitely invest in an eletric bilge pump. Yamaha's bilge system is a siphon system which isn't very effective for freestyle.
2) Yes, the factory b-pipe will work and is also one of the biggest performance increases you will see. So go ahead and do it and add the rest as you go.
3) No need for a quicksteer adapter if you are going to drill the steering nozzle so that the mounting point for the steering cable is closer to the nozzle itself. Drilling this hole and moving the cable closer is exactly what a quicksteer is.

Also, I storngly suggest that one of your first mods should to install some footholds. I recommend this upgrade even before the b-pipe.

Good luck.

x2. Don't bother with re-turfing until you are ready to get some footholds. If you want something temporary, just get some lifters to stick to the stock stuff.

Get a 96-07 pole and cable. This will allow for more throw. Cut it down 2 or 3 inches while you're at it.

Do that;

bilge pump
footholds/turf
intake grate
D cut the stock rideplate
0 or 4 degree bars
have the stock head milled

That should get you started

thank you all for your quick replies. i have to make this the right way the first time bc i am travellin to get all these parts as they r not available in my country (or even close).
i will thus add to the list bilge pump and footholds, and will look deeper into cdi or msd enhancer, as i dont know anything about these two>
no need for 12/17 propeller
will keep an eye open for pre 07 pole as they r rare around here
and finally i will go for b pipe instead of millin heads simply bc i cant trust anyone to do it correctly in Morocco
tk you again for ur advice

thamk you all for your replies.
just one last question... and i think we have cornered al possible first upgrade possibilities in this forum, for futur freestyler wannabes.

Is dual cooling obligatory when installing a factory b pipe without the boring engine part? recommended ? or just futile?
thanks again

Please check with someone else first regarding the '08 timing, compression, and cylinder design (I'm not sure if they've changed from the '96 - '07 or not). However, if they have not, then I'd also go for an ADA girdled head w/ 35cc domes, to put your compression at about 185psi. This will require you to use 92-93 octane fuel. The '96-'07 stock compression was 150psi I think. That's a good, noticeable difference and well worth the $ in my opinion.

the compression on the 08-09 skiis is a bit higher than 96-07. don't bother milling the head.

get the pipe, footholds, intake grate and make it steer. a bilge doesn't hurt but leave the stock one as a backup. that siphon bilge will always function where an electric bilge can fail.

lol moto i'm surprised you didn't tell him to buy hoodstraps or a brap strap (look at his status...guess why). and as for the prop...you should prob. leave it, but if you really wanted a new prop...you could probably sell your stock one for a good chunk of change...which could pay for most of your new prop

fear, is that pole you're talking about cut down? i'm considering my winter mods...picking up an 08 hull or keeping current hull and adding some trim and pump....maybe some light porting

Well,
I hope he check back here...as nobody said anything about the '08 steering cable. This is the root of the steering problem besides the mounting points, you can modify everything else but the '08 cable doesn't have the physical travel, it's like 15/16 inch shorter travel. MUST REPLACE WITH PRE-08 CABLE! (96-07)
