Freestyle Nozzle Cutouts?

Why is this done? I noticed it on bun's boats and eme boats nozzles. I have the skat nozzle, has anybody shortened and notched one of those? what were the results?

I could see cutting it at the top. I need to cut mine so it doesn't hit the hull so hard but I really don't care how hard it hits the bottom of the tray. If I had a few more degrees of trim I would need to cut it to get full throw.

But the 2nd picture is useless if you are going for trim throw. Looks like a contraption to help you get some stitches.

I don't really understand why they do it on the turn nozzle, but I've seen it done on the reduction nozzle. They'll cut the top back about 1" so that when the trim is pulled, there is less back pressure on the pump.

maybe clearance issues for when the trim is pulled and they are cranking the bars all the way left or right, there is a hull section that the nozzle can actually it, not sure if this is what they are attempting to rectify.......

I asked Malone about the second pict and he said that he did it for experimentation. He thought that the longer steering nozzle made for easier turning, and not as much back pressure as the longer nozzle. Or something like that.

Interesting subject.

Here's a pic I took of Pro 2007 World Champ Watanabe's winning ski at the World finals. I took the pic right after he won.
Looks like a cut off pro-tec steering nozzle.

No he will not!
You have to have one of those style as the OEM Kaw or Yam piece cant move with the throw of a good trim.

Not true, my OEM ball connector works fine with my Virgin trim. I'm not sure why everyone else has problems with the stockers, I have never had an issue from modified stock nozzles trims to Blowsion to Virgin :poke:

Maybe that's just with using a C.A.T.S. system and the Raider steering nozzle where it attaches on the bottom instead of the top. I dont have any other experience with the aftermarket trim systems.

I was referring only to my experience with CATS. I use the SJ pump nozzle with tabs welded to that and the raider trim ring/steering nozzle. The oem ball connecter end(kaw or YAm) would not let it go with the full throw, plus it was longer. Its what worked for me, and I have heard it from many others who built CATS systems...
Hope that made sense.

I agree with 113. I my setup would bind with the stock setup. I can't remember the exact measurements but I think the stock yamaha ball has only 22 degrees of throw. I modified my stocker with a dremmel so that there would be less resistance on the trim system. I have 34 degrees of throw and with the stock setup you could see the steering cable bend as when you pull the lever.

must be those N.A.S.A modifications :unitedstates:

I'm quite sure I don't know what you speak of :sneaky:

SJ113, I wasn't picking on you, I just like the OEM style better, it's much faster when taking the pump out. I did that like 87 times in Nashville, so during that process I decided I liked OEM better. I will say however that I did have to do some thinking and set it up just right to make it not bend the steering cable :dunce: It can be done on the Virgin system, but like you said I don't think it would work on a CATS using a stock nozzle.

SJ113, I like you man, what happened to your other avatar?
