Freestyle ski bilge newbie

Just bought a short hull 701 freestyle ski 44 magnum pump. Noticing it needing to be bilged somewhat frequently. Do freestyle riders sometimes recommend just running the bilge the entire time while riding?

Sounds like you have a leak somewhere.Fill the engine compartment with water on the trailer or stand to the top of the midshaft.See where the water comes out.Not foolproof but may help...

Not too many new school freestylers even have bilge pumps. Just scupper tubes. Unless you're doing subs or fountains you shouldn't be taking on much water. Put it in the water on a trailer. Take the hood off and look for water coming in around your midshaft and cables. Start it and look for water spraying out of your cooling system.. pipe, head, hoses.

Appreciate the responses, will definitely do the water check when I put it on the trailer. Also good to hear people run the bilge the whole time while riding, I’ve never done that with any of my other skis but I’ve never owned a short hull freestyle

Do whatever you need to do to keep engine bay dry. Fix leaks like others suggest and run pump if your riding habits tend to pull water in. The pumps are made to run dry and have very minimal draw. Keep water out at all costs. A shot glass full getting ingested by the engine is enough to stop the piston at top dead center and bend a rod totally wrecking your motor. Water does not compress

I didn’t get the feeling the OP was doing flips, but it’s worth mentioning that even a small amount of water in the hull can be ingested into the motor during a flip. This water can wash the oil off the cylinder walls and your high dollar freestyle engine will need to be freshened up even more often than usual.
