It will take someone with deep pockets to fund a large automated production run in order to cut prices substantially. The people who provide the equipment must also be in control of events and judging before a venture like this would be economical. Nobody will spend millions on production and allow a custom one of a kind boat to win. A backflip will become cheaper as hulls get shorter/fatter and larger engines/pumps more widely available. Competition wins will always go to whoever throws the most money at it.
