fresh hull build-

I bought a set or 2 of ski molds from a guy. I have some background with composites, but have never made a ski before.- and never did gel coat like this from the inside. I have worked a lot on a prototype composite thing i can't talk about (NDA's) but it has taught me a lot about the process and vacuum bagging.

This will not be a quick build- I am making the ski from scratch.

I did one hood top yesterday and quickly realized how much gel coat is needed- lots.

The first version was very light on the gel coat causing some ugliness.

I am just doing hand layups right now (my vacuum bag material has't shown up from my order 2 weeks ago).

These are 2 different hoods- the nasty one out of the mould is junk- the one still in the mold will get more work on it tomorrow.

Yes I am doing glass versions right now- carbon is expensive- very expensive. If the hood goes well tomorrow- I will start the bottom hull.

Top side of hood is done, and turned out much better than expected for only the 2nd go around. Just gel coated the bottom part of the hood. Got a gel coat gauge- you can see the indentations on the front flat part of the inner hood. - looks good to me. 20170826_140442.jpg

I want to bag the bottom deck, and i am getting no response from my sales rep at revchem... So I may just order it from composites one and see when they can deliver it. Hopefully in a week or so I will start on the bottom deck. it looks fairly simple vs the top deck... that looks like it will be a W-hore to make.

Well the build has hit a slight stop for the moment. I went riding last weekend, and took a chest shot to the handle bars of my buddies ski, missed my vest and took the handle bar straight to peck area....

Hurts to breathe, turn, laugh, cough, work, use my left arm etc... Bruised ribs for sure, maybe a cracked one. Swung by the Dr's office today and had some X-rays taken, should know by tomorrow.

Lots of Motrin and ice for me- and some stretching- hurts like hell. Hope to get gel coat on the bottom deck this weekend regardless of pain, just don't know if i'll be able to glass like this.

ribs aren't broken, but yes they are bruised. aside from ribs pain, it was in the mid 90's here. way to hot for doing glass work.... pot life was around 15 minutes.

Hope to see the temps drop some so I can really get cranking things out.

All I'm hearing is excuses. If you aren't in pain and sweating then something is wrong, lol.

SO if I am in pain and sweating does that mean Im doing something right?

Just got off the phone with Jeff (WDK) , he is super nice guy and very knowledgeable when it comes to composites. Huge help. Very nice to be able to consult with an expert in the field.

Well I have a big update.

Massive fires surround my town and evacuation orders are being given.

https://www.winebusiness.com/content/file/CountyStatusMap_20171011_0500s_(1).pdf

shows a map and fires surrounding me. I am in Napa, CA now....

Have the toy hauler packed up, got my skis, extra engines etc. and the suburban is hooked to it ready to go.... sadly I can't take my Cuda or my 64 caddy.... neither have much for insurance so that will be a massive loss if it all goes bad.

Just got healed up from the ribs injury, and its been too damn hot to do glass work now this.
