When you do start vac bagging, I assume your step up to some s-2 cloth glass? Mat like your using would be a waste in vac bag materials.

not much progress.. or any actually.

Just got back from Pismo- and broke all of my skis. LOL. Put a nice hole in my GTX2... above the water line. Wave took it out of my hands and threw it into my beach cart. crap.

Will be jumping back on this soon. Im pretty excited to build the hull. Just tough to find motivation to go work in the cold (58*) after 12 hr work days.

Yes, the thin layer of 3/4 oz mat is just used to make sure there are not air pockets between the gel coat and the glass.

Then comes the 24oz biax and then the mat again for a nice finished look.

The first layer kicks and is sanded in prep for the multiple glass layers coming.

It was too hot a few months ago, now it is too cold for me... LOL Guess this project is going to take a minute.

I just got my new Gel Coat gun, my last one was an old pressure pot setup with a 3.5 tip... small so it took forever to get enough gel into the mold. Now I have a 5.0 tip and should be able to lay the gel coat quickly.

Also got my new electric scissors- very happy with those. they cut through 24 oz material like butter. My hands had blisters from cutting by hand. I snapped several pairs of med grade shears... bought a nice $50 set of german shears and accidentally glued them together...

I hope to make a bit of progress this holiday weekend.

These are not the scissors- but they look almost identical, same coloring and everything. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Stalwart-1-25-in-Cordless-Power-Scissors-M550103/302567996 I paid about $100 for them. Also at my work we tried out a eBay or amazon special pair for like 25$, they worked surprisingly well, came with a spare battery and extra set of blades - just the battery charger quit after a few charges... We bought the $100 set, which is what i ended up buying. Ill look to see if there is any identifier on it, I know the box writing was in some chinese looking writing.

I am hoping this gun will be much better. https://www.amazon.com/G100-6-Professional-Grade-Sprays-Gelcoat/dp/B007VFO0CG
a buddies dad works at a marine repair place and said these work well for really building the gel coat up quickly. but get a few different nozzles tips to make sure it does what you want.

I also noticed a type-o in my pressure pot description- it was a 2.5 tip not a 3.5
the 2.5 would take forever to get enough gel on the mold that doing the bottom deck the stuff would start to kick in the pot before i could get it thick enough.

Not much forward progress to speak of. Have made several bottom decks that I am not happy with, too many air pockets that just wouldnt come out.
So now my yard Is filling up bottom decks.
Will be trying again soon.
I will say the pump area with all of the angles and curves is quite difficult.

Well it sounds like you've made progress by learning from your mistakes. That's how you get really good at your craft. Don't get discouraged. Maybe try and pick some hull builders or composite master's brains for some tricks of the trade for your issues. I'm sure I speak for everyone on this thread when I say I'm interested in your success and wish you luck.

I also want to see a picture of your yard now ;)
