Front sponsons on the FX-1 ?

after some time on the fx1 the 08 up superjet feels like it has training wheels. the fx1 is fun to slide around though. At speed on the fx1 if a guy gets just a little lazy it’ll pitch you off. My main thing with some sponsons is maybe my buddies will be able to ride it but I hope it don’t lose a ton of the looser ride

I think you made the right decision because they make such a big difference in the way the ski rides and handles. I also put a 650 kawi pump in mine and that also made a big difference.

(I thought I was the only one who falls off my FX-1 at 50 mph - wondering "What just happened?")

But the bottom line is this: "B-O-L-T - O-N" @tom21 front sponsons

If they are not for you (or for me) unbolt them and sell them. They apparently are in demand. Just sayin'.

Otherwise, post up your questions about handling and these gurus will try to help us all.

No Square..No Round..FX-1
Wow! this sponson thread really took off! In search of the perfect tubbie...
Anyway, since all the aftermarket sponsons are designed NOT TO FIT the FX-1, you are kinda forced to make your own. The FX I originally bought to hack up and use for plugs came with Blowsion Tubbies (originally for the Superjet). They were screwed on and adhered with brown construction adhesive.....they almost fit. There were some generous gaps that could have been sealed up better to look OK but....no. That's why I decided to make my own.
DIY-My approach was to make easy patterns using painters tape, all the while thinking about layering the 1/4"-3/4" foam on top as to get the overall rounded shape uniform. (it takes a few layers (and patterns) to get things where you want them. Then sanding the high spots to meet up with the layer outline below to create the flow. No added filler, just foam), and to be able to repeat the same exact shape on the other side (mirrored). The "copied" foam layers help keep the shape repeatable on both sides, as long as you glue them in the same position, on each side. Kinda like "paint by number". Then using 36-40 grit paper on a sanding block things come to shape quick. Just work on both sides at the same time to keep them the same. After they are shaped where you want them, use some fine conformable E-glass like 4-6-8oz Harness Satin or modified twill weave. That will be easier to drape and deal with than standard weave glass or chopped mat (EEEK!). Polyester is quicker to work with than epoxy, choose your poison... That's the basics, and a way to ditch the Barney purple.
Some additional Notes:
This kinda project isn't for everyone...
5oz. Divinycell foam, sands really easy
Use a heat gun to pre-shape the foam layers to match the side contour (less clamping needed)
Use ultra-lite easy sanding body filler as foam "glue"
The finer the E-glass, the less air bubbles in corners and edges...and stress
Your ski will be WAY different now, but look really cool

They are not exactly bolt and go. You have to screw the ends to the hull also... far from perfect fit.

I think your installation of the tom21 bolt on looked the best of the "manufactured" sponsons. Do you recommend the glass on version of tom21 instead of his bolt on or even something else?

I ordered the tom21 bolt-on FX-1 front sponsons in white from @tom21, I am stoked to get them, I haven't received them yet, so I haven't read his bolt on instructions yet, but I was kind of thinking that after dry fitting them for placement, drilling the bolt holes in the hull, and installing the bolt-on hardware inside the hull, I might apply some of this to the inside face of the sponsons to bridge any gaps, razor blade it to the edge, and then stick the sponsons on and bolt them up. But at this point, I am just speculating. And stoked!

Thanks @tom21 !!!!

It would be just a gap filler assuming that the instructions say that the bolts are a sufficient mechanical hold. Again, merely stoked speculation on my part . . .

PM @tom21 here. I.E., “Start a Conversation.” It took about a week but he responded to me via pm. (You know the guy is honest because he refused to take my money in advance.)
