the linked article, in my understanding, suggests that the carbs flow capabilities need to match the engines acceleration/rpm capabilities.

But reading the partial throttle section make me wonder if there is something to be gained in the throttle mechanism.

I would say the main difference in most of the aftermarket carbs is their bombsite design and how they bore the carb out. most carbs are not bored straight but have a ridge after the bomb site to improve carb signal. I'm sure a bunch of these dimensions differ based on how manufactures build and test the carb.
 
all of them work well,diff motor companies have diff deals with diff carb companies,they push what ever flavor they have worked out. Its much more easy to fig out one type carbs specs with given motor to all customers than try and fig them all out. IF you have time to tune and understand how,you can get any of them dialed
