FX-1 tear down/rebuild

Broke my handlepole at Daytona Freeride, flushed the ski and its pretty much been sitting since. Also did a nose stab into the sand and cracked the nose a little, have some cracked tubbies and some de laminating reinforcement.

Got a fixed length x-metal to replace the stocker, going to reinforce, fix the tubbies and also have to take off pump liner to grind it down. Probably more that I'm forgetting. Should hopefully be a quick build to get back on the water asap.

here's what I got so far.

No bueno when you can rip off your reinforcement by hand with little effort. Not sure if it was bad prep work or bad material, but the cloth feels like it didn't soak up any resin.

Came off way too easy. Also found I was running the ski with 2 broken motor mounts.

Pics of the pole carnage.

Got the sides grinded down good and laid a sheet of 18 oz biaxal all the way to the nose.

Got some more done today. Laid another layer of biaxal on the right side of the ski, all the way to the nose. IMG_0477.JPG
both tubbies had crack along the bottom. I went at the cracks with the dremel , mixed the little bit of the leftover epoxy with milled fibers and white tint, and filled them in IMG_0475.JPG IMG_0476.JPG IMG_0478.JPG IMG_0479.JPG
Goal is to get back on the water asap. Tomorrow I'll prep the engine bay for a quick rattle can paint job. Any insight on what paint I should use?

Thanks

Reinforced Fx-1 with tubbies, gas filler hose, scoop grate and hull hardware weighed in at 123 lbs. Seems a bit heavy to me, I'm afraid of the foam being waterlogged but I guess I'll have to wait till I tear her down again to find out.

My FX-1 came it at 88 lbs after reinforce with no hardware at all and stock foam.
The reinforcing was with 2 layers of glass on the sides to the nose, with one layer on the bottom. Filled in the hood lip hull side around the hood recess underneath the hood seal area to prevent excessive flex to keep hood sealed up when landing sideways, and I think we went with 3 layers under the pole mount area since I have busted the pole and mount many times - it seemed the glass hull was the weak link now around the handle pole mount and lots of little cracks...maybe just gel coat, but the cracks were growing. I opted not to paint, but just used red tint in the glass and it looks killer inside. I think it actually rides a little better. After grinding and prep before reinforcing with no hardware the hull was 77 lbs with stock foam still inside.
Good luck and hope your back on the water asap Danny!

Definitely waterlogged. Found a bad seal around the exhaust pipe. Leaned the ski back and water started dripping out.

Figured I'd just go ahead and fix it while the ski is this torn down. Hopefully I'll have the tray out tomorrow

just get in there and get it out of the way. its nasty and it sucks but your making the right choice not to delay the inevitable any longer. your next ride will be more rewarding knowing you checked that off the list and not have to think about it again and again. not to mention make more work for yourself and cut up new turf etc etc.. good luck!

Yep definitely just going to knock that out of the way. Probably going to refoam with the pink sheet foam and add drains while I'm at it.

Didn't get the tray out but got more turf removed yesterday. image.jpg

More Progress.
My day was hectic and I was only able to squeeze in about 2 hours of work on this thing. I was able to get the tray out, with about every flathead screwdriver I own and the sacrifice of the PVC front foothold.

Lots of wet foam to play with tomorrow. IMG_0503.JPG IMG_0504.JPG

Lots of water. I'm hoping at least 30-40 lbs of foam and water come out of here. image.jpgimage.jpg
Got some foam out today but it's slow going. Hoping to borrow a pressure washer tomorrow to finish it off.

once its all clean and out.. a clean and hallow tray is piece of mind and a blank canvas to start n. yes sir pink/green EPS foam and some hull drains will finish that out quite well. make sure you slather some 5200 adhesive around all the tubing and dshaft tube to the pump tunnel

If a pressure washer doesn't work that well for ya, a wire brush attachment on a drill with a shop vac works wonders...

Thanks for all the input guys. Any suggestions for wire brush tips to get into the tight spots? In case I cant get that pressure washer

I'm planning on running a second 3/8 line for dual cooling, don't know why I didn't when I widened the tray the first time..

what's the way to go? stainless? aluminum? brass?

Just got back in town from a little vacay and got back to work on this puppy. Got about 90% of the foam out with a few different wire wheel attachments. I weighed the hull in at 102 lbs with the exhaust tube and tray sitting in it. It still has wet foam all under the scupper tube and in a few other spots so hopefully ill get a little more weight off.

pressure wash is next when I can borrow one.

Client work and school stuff has kept this build at a snails pace lately. Saturday I was able to get 95% of the foam out with wire wheel attachments and a drill. Still some under the one way valve that I couldn't reach.

I took all the tubing out minus the one way valve, in order to prep the surfaces and re glue everything w/ 5200. I need to replace the cooling line as it's slowly but surely corroding, and add another for dual cooling.

Where could I find some stainless steel 3/8 tubing? image.jpg

Alum tube is fine. Stainless is better choice. McmasterCarr ships fast and very reasonable. you can find semi-bendable alum tubing for sinks and such that are hard lines at home depot and lowes etc. you can just cut the barbed for flared end off that would go into a ball valve on a water supply line.
