FX-1 FX1 winter build

Finally decided to put my ski under the knife for a winter project.

Ski is pretty much stock besides a bpipe. Going to be widening the tray, 144 pump swap with the 144 shoe. Planning on modeling the ski after this, but a Yamaha blue instead of green.



Here's some progress

Tray out, measures 16.5 now.



Defoamed, pulled all the lines and exhaust. Have to lower the exhaust also. Planning on keeping the stock bilge and adding a separate line for dual cooling


Got the pump and shoe in and all aligned. Went the fiberglass route instead of modding the pump that way I can just swap pumps with no mods if ever need be.
Started by cutting the front hole out and lowered them about a 1/4 inch. Reinforced the back side of the shoe area before grinding. Used thickened epoxy and screws to set the shoe in place once the grinding was done.
Pulled the mid shaft housing and sighted down the driveshaft to get it dead in the center, took about a 1/16 shim under the back mounting holes.

So here's some updates

Got the tray foamed. Ordered some expanded polypropylene foam from flyingfoam that won't absorb water. 5 sheets of 1.5" 1.9 density. Still fairly light and only cost about 90 shipped. Did two layers, laid the first one on edge for more strength and the second layer horizontal for a smooth top. Hopefully will never open up the tray again, also added two drain plugs. Epoxyed the pump nuts in place and sealed them off with 5200 so they're not recessed how the stock setup is.


Started on glassing. 4 layers of 1708 biaxial for the bottom of the tray. Figure that should be plenty strong. Just gotta get the sides next.


Painted the inside of the hull with some appliance epoxy spray paint. Have had pretty good luck with this stuff holding up on a section I painted on the outside of the hull a few seasons ago.

It's worth the time to bolt your engine in and try pulling those engine mount pads up off the hull. Not uncommon for the glue to fail that holds them down.

Please put a 155 pump in this...

You have to grind a decent amount out of the rideplate to get the 144 in there, I couldn't imagine what would be left after putting a 155 in.

Yeah those plates felt pretty solid when I pulled it but did find one motor mount that needs replacing. Plus I'm not too worried about it mostly just do flat water riding jumping off boat wakes and what not.

I can definitely not see a 155 fitting with out some serious glass work. 144 is pretty tight as is.

So I'm at this point with my tray. Having some issues with the glass staying down on the top corners. So I trimmed off the excess and I'm gonna do a few more layers. Whats the best way to get it to stay down besides a vacuum, maybe clamps with foams?

Some updates, been a while.

Got my tom21 tubbies glasses on.


Filled in the area by the nose for a more seamless look since I won't be using the stock plastic piece and I picked up a lowered pole mount from waterdawgkustomz.


Also filled this area in instead of turfing it

Just got done laying this thickened epoxy down to smooth and level the tray out and seal it up from water intrusion hopefully. Gonna do the sides once it's dry.


Rest of the hull is pretty much prepped and ready for paint. Filled in all the chips and nicks, sanded it all with 120. So hopefully next week it'll be getting painted.
