Custom/Hybrid g3 in the surf. :-):-):-):-):-):-) thread.

I am gearing up for a winter build of a aftermarket hull. I am coming from my trusty old Squarenose and ride mostly flatwater, but living in Oregon I just started to ride surf this summer. I weigh 165, ride pretty aggressively but my SN is limiting my ability to "throw around" a hull.

I know the G3 is a flatwater boat with lots of followers and it looks like a fun $ss hull to ride. Of you g3, or g2 owners how does it compare in the surf?

Any thoughts on the surf ability of the g3, or g2 for that matter and besides handling characteristics does it have the ability to hold up to mistakes in the surf?

Thanks
P.

the only person i have seen ride the BOB well in the surf was christian young. i tried it and hated it personally. rode nose high and felt unstable. like benny said if you want a really short hull thats good in surf i would go foot rocket. i rode nick bartons at surfslam and was really stable and liked it a lot, and it didnt ride nose high.

Thanks Kraqus, and jhall752. I appreciate the input. I am hoping others will chime in, this surealy is just a :):):):):):) thread. Give me the good and the bad.

Foot rocket, I am pretty sure I saw one on the beach at surf slam?, all white?? If that was the hull, it looked crazy small.

the all white foot rocket is Stanton High's, I rode it a couple weeks ago at pismo, I liked it

fearmywrx rode the 3ride at surf slam, you could pm him, I'm sure others rode it as well

Yeah, that was the hull I saw...it looks pretty amazing.

I didn't get a chance to see the 3 ride...anyone ride one at Surfslam? Input.

Still eager to hear from g3 owners I know the bottom of the hull was changed a lot, and the "buld" removed from the rocker that was causing soo much problems.

my rok has been flipped and rolled in surf and flat

roks dont ride too nose high, but they do take a little getting used to in surf like most short hulls

I watch Stanton go huge on a FootRocket everyweekend! Never seen anyone go that big on BOB. Although being a novice I have ridden both in the surf and was exhausted after 3 min on the BOB. Stanton on the other hand had to give me the nod to come in. Not to mention the BOB didn't feel as steady.

I imagine that new BOB 3ride will be kickace in surf

Ehhh, it was alright. I rode their prototype and gave my feedback. I know they are tweaking and making changes and it's said it will be at world finals. Though, it's hard to test a surf hull in flat water. Only time will tell.

I was actually the only person to ride the 3ride at Surf Slam (aside from one of the ski clinic guys) before the nozzle broke. The top bolt fell out of the steering nozzle then completely broke off when I did a roll.

Rode the foot rocket and was really impressed as were just about everyone else that I rode with.

What about the JB1? how much smaller is the footrocket that it?, just found krash industries website..

The foot rocket is shorter than the JB1. But the foot rocket has different tail plates that you can put on it to adjust the length. The foot rocket is geared more towards flat water and smaller surf while the JB1 is a "surf boat" but I've seen it flat water flipped 800cc ish power. Im sure if the talent is there, you could do it with less.

As far as length of the JB1, it's one inch shorter than the XFR which is a couple inches shorter than the FR2 which is shorter than the superjet. I believe the Footrocket is 5 inches shorter than the Footrocket but not 100 percent sure. Like I said, the foot rocket has the adjustably to be longer with the tail plates. Even with a tail plate or hull extensions, it won't quite act the same as a longer ski but simulates it quite well.

Im actually in the Market for a JB1. The foot rocket was fun and Im sure I'd enjoy it but I like having a little substance and length behind the boat to assist with surf slashes and surf riding.

I've ridden just about every aftermarket hull (rickters, super freaks, eme's, lightweight, bob ect.) with exception to some of these newer hulls (rok-r, eme micro, new super freak circus) and so far the foot rocket has been my favorite. I like surf riding and doing ariels, not so much just flat water flips. So my liking and tastes are a little different than others.

After riding the Footrocket, I feel I'd like the JB1 even more because its a little longer but also nimble. I found myself over rotating flips with the foot rocket so I am sure the JB1 would do just fine. I feel if I can comfortably flip/roll on a stock length SJ then I shouldn't have an issue doing it on a JB1, I don't need it to be super short in order to pull off those maneuvers.

I am not claiming to be the best rider or anywhere close to. Im an average Joe that had the balls and motivation to try. After good instruction and practice I was able to pull these things off. Thanks Zack/Jake Bright, John H (227), and Matt Smith for helping me out learning.

In essence and to get back on Subject. I'd prob stay way from the G2/G3 for surf and go with a different aftermarket hull if you plan on riding surf frequently as they are purpose built for that. The JB1 and Footrocket along with many other aftermarket hulls are a good example of this.

As far as the 3ride by the ski clinic, it's really too early to tell but after they are introduced to the market, time will tell.

PM me if you have any questions! And if your ordering soon. Barton offers discounts for multiple hulls ordered. I'd like to be a part of that if at all possible.

After riding the FootRocket, in surf at Pismo first and this past weekend in Flat Water at Miller Park, I have to say it is an extremely versatile Hull. I have ridden my share of AM hulls and this one left a HUGE impression on me. It was easy to get on it while floating, got on plane immediately and had no significant porpoising. The ride was very stable and the Boat did what I pushed it to do and did it quite effortlessly.
Of all the AM hull I have ridden, I can tell right away this one would have less of a learning curve......but still has its learning curve. I am really interested on riding a JB1 now and see how it compares to the FootRocket handling.

Group buy? that is an excellent idea......next year for next season I may be in the market for an AM hull.

fearmywrx, and Kraqus (benny) Thanks, your information was spot on, in terms of what I was looking for. Hats off to you, Rather than just saying "horsepower will flip anything". I really appreciate your input. I am not a pro rider, nor do I plan on trying to become one. Just a weekend basher that has guts to try things. One thing that drives me crazy on forums is reading, "with enough motor, you will flip anything" yes, this could be true. However most of us lifelong weekend riders don't have Money for a 6-7k hull and a 8k motor to "flip anything" with. Not to mention, power shouldn't replace skill, and the process of learning tricks.
I am all over the place in terms of choosing a hull, but this helps. The footrocket and jb1 sound pretty close to what I am looking for as well. Let me introduce one more hull to the mix. The trinity Matrix, I talked to Mark Gomez at surf slam and he had nice things to say about his hull, for an aftermarket hull it looked long to me. input? Mark are you out there? possibly you can chime in on this in more detail.

A group buy might be really, worth the while to wait. regardless of which hull I choose it will happen, in probably March/April. Cutting it close to riding season, but between building a new motor and piecing together parts all winter that is kind of my time line.

Thanks
P.

Flipping in the surf doesn't require a ton of motor, just balls. I've watched Stanton and others go HUGE at pismo in a RN hull with 701.

A lot of people show up to the site, and their very first post is "I'm buying my first ski and I want to flat water flip what do I need to do" - the answer to this is hella motor.
