Garage lift/storage for AM skis

Alright guys, trying to think of how to get my superfreak off my trailer during the summer by myself *without damaging it. I thought first about reinforcing my truces in my garage to support an 800lb electric winch. I know this would work to lift my Fx1 from the rails but I don't trust doing that to the superfreak. How is everyone else doing this by themselves? Any ideas appreciated :)

  • Moving skis with a hoist and straps in a garage is popular it works well
  • Do you and your buddies lift the ski and carry it around ever? Why would a and sling be any different?
  • No idea on the quality of the hull but I sure hope it can hold up to that ‍♂️

I bought a hydraulic table from harbor freight. Cut it up a bit, mounted bunks on it and use it to raise/lower skis to almost any height needed. My aftermarket ski I built a stand that's the height of my tailgate, so I just slide it in my bed. My superjet i built a snap that's the height of my hitch hauler, slide on slide off. But sometimes, I have to take the two skis together on a trailer. That's where the hydraulic table comes into play. Works excellent. I can grab some pictures next time I'm in the garage.

It's not so much the quality of the ski I'm worried about, its the integrity of the rails to support that weight.

Do they have to be stored overhead? I made some carts trailer height that are no wider than the ski so they live against the wall and I can still get a car in.

No they don't the bigger thing is just making it easy/fast for me to unload and load them by myself because my trailer is a large aluminum 2 place and I only have my Fx1 and superfreak but don't want them sitting outside. I know I can slide them on/off by myself but would prefer to make it easy on myself if I am doing it every weekend

I was going to get an electric winch and mount it in my attic above my garage to lift skis off trailers, stands and truck beds. It would have worked slick until I found out the manufactured trusses in my garage roof were designed to carry a load on the roof, but not hanging from the lower cross brace (chord). Several engineers advised me against doing this, so now I'm thinking about adding a steel beam large enough to lift 1,000# in the center with two uprights on the side walls bigenough to support the beam and the load.

I also have trailer high carts for my fx1 and blaster. Moving them from one to the other is easy. They are also much easier to work on when they are on a rolling cart in the garage.
 
I would just find a smaller Trailer, a proper Dual Stand-Up Trailer, that fits in the Garage and then don't need to constantly muscle and double-handle the Skis.

Is the current Trailer too long? Because apparently it's narrow enough to back into the Garage under a Winch hanging from a Truss? Can you modify the Trailer Front to de-couple or fold to shorten the overall length to fit inside the Garage?

Even with an Overhead Winch, still have to move the Trailer out of the way to land each Ski unless you can lift both at the same time or have an overhead travelling crane o_O?

And always have to balance the Ski Lift points for a Level Lift. What a hassle!
I have a problem that during the summer I keep my two mazdas in my garage with my 2 stand ups, there isnt any room for the trailer and my trailer is nice and new aluminum triton, don't want to get a different one either. I was thinking about having the winch on a small sliding system so it could move side to side to pick up a ski...just spit balling ideas

I have heard that as well, I saw you can reinforce it. Just trying to figure things out.... maybe it isnt feasible

Have you considered a davit crane, I have a davit crane I use quite a bit, its on the corner of the shop so I can pick up a ski and swing it around through the shop door into the shop, I also have a gantry crane with an electric winch, a cherry picker and a funky portable electric winch on a stand, you tilt the whole thing back to wheel it around, I don't pick up anything anymore.

In Wisconsin, we hang deer from our garage trusses. A single 2x6, spanning 2 cars, has no problem suspending two deer without flex(approx 300-400 pounds). I've seen 5 deer hanging from one 2x6....not my garage.

I would just reinforce the chord with a 2x8 on the two trusses you want to hang from. An FX1 is below 400 pounds. The chord is there to keep the triangle truss from expanding, not perpendicular pull.
 
On all of my freaks the rails seem plenty strong. The hoods and above the rails on the sides of the engine compartment do seem thin on some, but not the rails or bottoms. I have a hoist in a couple spots in my garage and used multiple 2x6`s to span the weight across multiple trusses. The deal is that no truss manufacturer designs a truss to support any weight from the bottom cord. So technically you should`t use them to lift skis, engines, etc even though a lot of people do. That being said when you go up in the attic or are building the roof all of the construction guys walk on the bottom cord of the trusses and at that point they will have 150-250lbs on a single truss as they walk across, so they must be able to support some weight. I normally just pull them back off the ski hauler and down onto a roller cart. The ski hauler has an electric winch, so i just winch them back up onto it.

Having an overhead lift system is nice but dealing with the trolly/winch/jetski sling isn't something I'd want to do every weekend. If you already have the rolling carts I'd just get a couple sets of marine slides to make shuffling easier: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001HROA3S?th=1&psc=1

I've got one of these mini pallet stackers and only use it at the end of the season to put them away. It works awesome for that but then also takes up floor space that would be very valuable in a 24x24.
