Other Gel coat

Anybody ever re paint their ski with gel coat? Just curious as to how it turned out, I'm going to be repainting mine and I'm considering using gel coat.

Gel coat sprayed after rocker install. Looks great but takes a lot of wet sanding and buffing to get rid of the orange peel.

I'm not sure exactly, its in bulk. We did it where we have the Backie Chans made.

Subscribed...I have been fighting with keeping clear coat on my ski for the last 4 years. 5 minutes in the water and it's gone like a fallen off decal. There must be something out there that will stick to SMC and be underwater capable...without paying a fortune. I want to try appliance epoxy paint next. I know it's durable on stoves at least :)

I always either do gel coat or get it wrapped. Can't go wrong with either.

It's not impressive if you want a showrrom finish. However, its a great 50ft paint job. It doesn't always hold up to impact but nothing is easier to touch up.

Spraying it's not bad if u cut it with Duratec clear 50/50. I did my old SJ with it and worked fine. Sanded it down with 120/180/220 and sprayed it twice. Not showroom but still smooth and its durable.

No matter what color the gel coat, if it's sprayed it will look like a golf ball until it is wet sanded and buffed.

If you have a smooth surface to start with and you want gel coat(I would recommend auto body paint), you can add a additive that makes it flow out real smooth, almost paint like. I have used the Duratec high gloss additive many times and it really worked well, and makes for MUCH less wet sanding/buffing. Looks real smooth after spraying.

What kind of gun do you use? I have only used a dump gun for gelcoat but have been told a HVLP gun with a 2.0 works.

I'm not a huge fan of my G100 in molds but it is easy to clean.

I don't spray it. I take all my hulls to our backie chan manufacturing facility and let them spray it. I'm just lucky enough to get the task of sanding and buffing.

I just stopped by Lowes and never thought about it until I saw it...what about engine enamel? It's gas and oil resistant, high heat tolerance, high gloss finish...any thoughts?

Engine enamel works but it doesn't have as high of a build that gel coat gives. I shot mine out of a HVLP gun cut 50/50 with Duratec clear. Black gel coat. No orange peel never sanded.

Another thing about gel coat on a hull is that gel coat doesnt flex very well, and that's when you get the hair line cracks(but that is mostly cosmetic).. but its does take a lot of abuse.

I just left the local boating supplies place and while browsing the painting supplies I saw something called Easypoxy colored top coat. It's a polyurethane. It must work just not sure how well without doing an epoxy primer first. I have tried Rustoleum paints, Tremclad held up the best, Duplicolor. Tried Minwax helmsman spar urethane, Por30 marine clear coat, all of them left the hull in less than 5 minutes of being submerged. The only clear coat yet that lasted the longest was made by VHT brake caliper clear but it took to the orange peel effect in a bit of a bad way.

If u want to paint appliance paint is pretty durable and reasonable. I've put that on a few SN hills that lasted well. Single stage HOK paint has been my best bang for the buck though.
