If you have a smooth surface to start with and you want gel coat(I would recommend auto body paint), you can add a additive that makes it flow out real smooth, almost paint like. I have used the Duratec high gloss additive many times and it really worked well, and makes for MUCH less wet sanding/buffing. Looks real smooth after spraying.
This right here ^^^. Duratec high gloss is an amazing additive for spraying out of mold gelcoat (or any thick polyester based coating). I mainly use it with their surfacing primer for my plugs. With high gloss I can shoot it from a 1.3 tip with minimal orange peel. Without, 2.0 tip minimum with tons of orange peel.
