I'm having trouble finding any places that will GelCoat my superjet. I found one place but they gave me an estimate of $3,500!!

I have the whole ski stripped down to fiberglass and I've touched up on some rough spots with fairing compound.
Does anyone know of a place in Dallas I can get my ski GelCoated for a reasonable price? Or is it worth just buying GelCoat and doing it myself?

Definitely paint it. Gelcoat is hard to spray. Id recommend Base clear on the top. Shoot a 2k primer and block sand that smooth out to 400-800 then paint it.

Interlux epoxy on the bottom hull.

3500 is not outrageous really. A good paint job would be around 2-3k.

Thanks for the responses guys, sorry for the slow replies. I have been loosing faith in trying to paint it myself because I have no experience with painting. But judging from these responses I'm just going to try doing it myself next week.

Thanks for the info

Most people never look at your ski close enough to see such minor blemishes. They never show up in a video or a camera. Also, if you do the best you can and are unhappy, as long as you took the time to get a good base on the primer layer, you can always wet sand the paint smooth and get a full custom printed wrap. Wraps don't care about wet sanding, just that there is a smooth base under it. A top quality custom printed wrap installed is about $1500. They can be had for less depending on various factors such as the rep of the shop and the number of revisions in your design and etc. I wouldn't try to install a full wrap myself. I wrapped my pole with cheap vinyl and it was a mofo. I could have painted it better.

I put stuff like this on my pole and I was pleased. Only thing is that I tried to do the whole pole in one 24x50" piece and that's was unrealistic. If I did the bottom first and then the top, I could have gotten it without stretch marks no problem.

Be sure that you use a good primer like the Chromate Free Epoxy Primer and a good paint like one of these pearl basecoats. When you clear, and you should, use a high quality clear like UC-35 because of its hardness and UV protection for your color.

Easy or cheap as you'd like it to be? Pretty sure that's a no. However, that primer will keep your paint from flaking up, good paint with a good pigment will look great a long time, clear like the UC35 will hold up and serve you well. Follow the directions and call coast if you need help.

Full disclosure: I am a fanboy of House of Kolor but not a rep or anything.
