I have revisited this over the weekend and made zero progress. It also looks like vbulletin is actually locked into a specific type of search and I can't even change it, so I'll probably add a Google custom search to see if that helps.

I was going to suggest Google custom search. It works pretty well and you can allow it to search any site you want. Yet another advertising opportunity for vendors on the X.
