GoPro BE 3+ : Better than the original BE 3? Maybe. Maybe not.

I have the gopro 3 black. Didn't get the 3+ black due to the issues I read. After 2 more attempts this a.m. it finally said that the update was successful.
I was ready to take it back to best buy today if it didn't work.
I agree with u 110%, its ridiculous that a $300-$400 unit needs an update right out of the box to operate at its full and correct potential. Wtf kind of poop is that??!?!?!
Now that my update "was successful", will the issue with the camera getting hot after a few mins be solved?

Good that it eventually worked. What a pain! Glad we agree about these bloody issues right out of the box....

If it stays hot you might find this read useful: (top post then very bottom post )

I am glad you can go to the store with it if you have to....

Now I have another problem!! I'm on vacation and have recorded quite a few videos. 1080p at 30fps protune on and some off, also recorded some at 720. I'm using a sandisk 32gb class10 in the camera. When I playback the videos on my phone with the gopro app all is good. But when I playback/view them on my laptop the videos are extremely choppy and lag really bad. I have a Compaq that's about 4-5 yrs old with windows Vista basic home edition. I've tried playing them through the gopro edit software which is playable but when I play them using VLC media player or QuickTime they start for 1-2 secs then quit playing, then sometimes they jump 20+ secs into it then quit again. This has me stumped!
Any suggestions or help would be really appreciated!!!!!! Had I known this would be such a headache I definitely would've reconsidered my want list, lol

Copy them to the computer first, then try to play and see if it's smooth. When copying, check the transfer rate and you'll get a good idea if the card reader is the bottleneck or not.

The LED back is more trouble than it's worth. Bought one for the Hero 2, and it kills battery life. For the Hero 3, an ipad or phone (w/ app) is a better option. Also, does the silver have WiFi?, 'cause the remote that comes w/ black is useless.

Just a FYI the new smaller hero3 HOUSING will not fit the Cold-Fusion go pro mounts

the 3+ camera will fit fine in the older Housings

go pro has told us they are currently shipping the 3+ LCD kits with the OLD (larger) waterproof housing as they dont have the rear doors yet for the lcd back or the battery back

we are waiting on the new rear doors for the here 3+ to see what redesign is necessary

The fact that they are working ok on your newer cell phone is a good sign. To me that suggests the problem is with the older computer. Are the VIC media plaer

I am not a GoPro owner yet (I work with a Nikon D800) so this may or may not be useful. I really suspect that there is a software incompatibility and that you older computer does not have enough RAM or processing speed for HD vdeo etc.

Will do a search now...

THIS seems to be on the lines of what I was trying to say in my earlier post. Hope this all helps!

The remote is great if you have more than 1 camera to control from what I know. A buddy just bought a 3+ Silver so I may test the remote with both cameras at the same time.

Yes the Silver has wifi.

Recorded some more vids today, got home and tried to upload everything to my oldie but a Goldie laptop, and there was one video that was saved as an mp4. The rest are not videos but saved as .LRV and .THM files according to my laptop. The videos are viewable on my gopro app on my phone but not on the laptop. I noticed that when I was recording a video while on a ride today, the camera quit recording at about 1 min 30 sec then I started recording again and it quit at less than 1 min. This happened 2 or 3 times.
I'm really starting to lose my patience with this damn camera. Its been one problem after the next.

I'd say you need to read up a little. 60fps is the lowest you can go at 720p. If you're doing action of any kind you won't want less than 60.

.thm is a thumbnail file, .lrv is a low res video file for the App, that's what you're watching with your phone. Protune is really only needed if you're going to do post-processing in a video editor.

According to the link on post #30, at the very end of that info it states to try shooting at 720 30fps.
I've done plenty of reading! Also got the file corruption error message today. Had to pull the battery to fix that headache. And no files were corrected like it says should have happened in the manual. Other (numerous) gopro users have had the same issue.
What editing software do you use? I downloaded the free software from the gopro website. Anything better than that's free?

The link in post 30 is generic advice for all cameras. The black 3 doesn't do 720p30fps.

I use the GoPro software and have used Movie Maker in Win7, but I have basic needs too. I have used Vegas before but not with the GP.

So is there any way to get my LRV files back to mp4 format? And what would cause a video to become corrupted while recording???

You're missing the point, the lrv files are just for the app, they are not 1080p or whatever resolution you shot at.

Format the card in the camera and go from there.

I already erased everything on the card but saved it on my laptop. Sorry if I sound like a total noob. I'm pretty tech savy, just new to the gopro game.

WTF? ^ Really? Have you purchased any new electronics in the last 3 years?

PS4 and Xbox One both had immediate updates required right out of the box, so did my new laptop, Blu-Ray player and R/C Heli remote. I guess it's the way companies are going to release the newest technology to the public, before all updates are complete. Besides, can you name a better action sports camera? I can't...

Regarding your slow/choppy playback issues your are having on your Laptop, I had the same problem. Your computer/video card can't handle it. When I play videos on my new setup, everything works fine.
