GoPro on Helmet Best Practices?

Hey all --

Just got a GoPro yesterday and will be using it at my next race.

I plan on attaching it to my helmet. Are there any best practices that I should follow to make sure I get the best video and to ensure it won't fall off during the race?

Thanks!

I ran the helmet mount until I tried the "chesty" IMO the chesty mount gives a better perspective, especially if you are chasing buoys. If you are running the helmet mount, be sure to tighten all the knobs (with a Phillips head screwdriver) so the camera doesn't move during your race. Have fun!

Use a smart phone app to to see how the framing is and adjust it. Much easier and quicker than shooting a video, watching it on computer, adjusting, and repeating.

Good advise above re: a tether. If you crash and break the mount you won't lose the camera. Use the mount and a spot on the helmet where it makes good contact (as much is in contact as possible), the self stick pads work well as long as you've got a fair amount of contact.

If I tighten the knobs hard by hand it doesn't move around.

IMO keep a little bit of your body/helmet/boat in frame for reference, but what really makes a shot good is being close behind someone else and shooting them. If you led the whole race it would be a boring video, unless you are just watching it yourself to critique later. (actually shooting behind you with a buddy right behind you gives the best video IMO)

I like the one button record setting. When you push the button it turns on the camera and starts recording. When you hold down the button again it turns it off. It seems way more foolproof than the default mode, many buddies leave their camera on (not recording) for an hour or so and burn up their battery, or record when they think it's off and vice versa.

On mine I opened the tether knot and slipped it thru the center of the hing pin and Re-tie the knot. When mounting cam to helmet fish the tether loop thru the anchor and bring the loop back over the hole camera then mount camera on its anchor
