Custom/Hybrid GoPro talk

Since Christmas is less than 2 months away, I thought it would be a good idea to talk about go-pros :naughty:. Theres so many different versions of them ( moto sport, surf,Hero, naked, helmet, etc) , so maybe if you use one- you could post up some details. What model you got ( specifics ), what settings you use, and how you mount it. Also let us know what your opinions on it are.

I just upgraded my hero with a rage cam lens and flat occulus, it was a great upgrade. Now it looks like I need to get a new one. :( the timing is impeccable. I cant wait to see some of the action shots with the burst mode. 10 pics in 1 sec. now if they could just keep the water from beading in the middle of the occulus it would be perfect.

Yep.

Besides the "2x sharper lens" it sounds like a firmware upgrade, not much of a hardware upgrade to me though. 120fps, but standard definition - kinda lame. Still no way to preview your viewing angle built in either - one thing I've always hated about the gopro. Throw some lasers on that thing or something. That being said I do own 2 of them, lol.

I read up on the new HD2 and it seems the best improvement is the multiple lens angles, 170 wide, 127 medium and 90 low. The old HD's lens only films in 170 and 127 and always has that fisheye look. Thats fine if you're filming your self, however if you want to film your friends it sucks, because anything further than 10 feet away appears to be a mile away. I'm hoping the new 90 low setting will enable the HD2 to be used to film others as well as your self.

That and hopefully still maintain stability.

My girl got me the backpack screen for my hd and for me it's over rated. But some others may like using it for some stuff. I'm going to wait and se how the new one does before grabbing one. I am very happy with mine, but like 227 said, the fisheye view is such a bummer for showing wave size, air caught, how close you are when videoing other riders etc. But (according to gopro) if it doesn't have the fisheye look, the camera will lose stabilization and have a very shaky playback. Maybe they figured something out though. That would be cool !

I have one gopro with the regular lens and one with a narrow angle lens. The narrow angle lens is definitely less stable looking, its noticeable. I use the narrow lens when I can mount to something that I know wont move, for helmet camming its too shakey.

I have the same, one of each. I actually prefer the old regular lens GoPro. Yes the footage is less stabile but you can overcome that by practicing your video techniques and through editing. The good thing about the old regular lens is that you can video your friends and it doesn't look like they're a mile away. The fisheye is worthless for anything further than 10' away. If Go Pro can pull off both lens options in one camera that would be Money!

If you want to eliminate the fisheye effect go to ragecams.com or look them up on ebay. for about 80 dollars you can eliminate the fisheye completely, get the 3.0mm lens and flat occulus. it really makes a big difference in perception of depth. takes about 20 min to make the right modifications to the gopro to get aftermarket lenses to work.

yes I just recently did the conversion, but i have both some above water and underwater footage of our last vacation on it. I'll post some up for you as soon as I get home. It makes snorkeling footage a million times better!
