300/440/550 Grate for 550, whats best?

I have a good running 89 550, im hoping that i can get it to hook up better, the pump sucks air when you get going too fast or in chop. Ive been looking at all the available grates but am unsure as to what kind to get. Do i want the open scoop type with taller sides, or the ones with the fin in the middle? is that a toploader? what works best? the ski is stock.

I would get a toploader. You might lose a little top end, but who cares, you probably want to stay hooked up more than anything. I have tried a number of different intake grates on my 440, 650sx and now my Superjet, the toploader is the only type that I really felt made a significant difference. They just work. I would also stay away from the early PJS toploaders that you might find used on ebay. Just get a new Worx or R&D if you can spend the money. These will have deep sides as well. I personally have the worx one on my superjet and I'm very pleased.

If you still have the stock rideplate, look for an oceanpro long plate. I really liked mine. Unless you're really planning on going freestyle with the 550, just get a nice long one and enjoy it.

Thanks for the comments. Although the ski is stock motorwise i do have a Team Butch rideplate that i have shimmed the back two bolts and im running a Jetline stainless prop. Im not too worried about top end so much. But id like it to hook up as you mention.

Be sure your impeller is shimmed tight and to be honest the jetline impeller's are not very good you might want to keep an eye open for a skat 15 or 15.5 or better yet a solas.
A toploader will definately help with cavitation. laserman over on pwc just had a shredmaster rideplate for sale at good price, those are one piece with the intake scoop grate and rideplate all in one, I have heard alot of good about them. goodl uck
