grease on exhaust gaskets

I read that jss silicon (silicone?) grease is good for some gaskets like the flywheel cover. Apparently it makes a good seal and allows the gasket to be re-usable.

Would it be a good choice for an exhaust gasket? (61x cylinder, coffman manifold)

Maybe a more durable sealant like 1211 be better.

i use JSS ski grease on all my gaskets... even if the gasket doesn't become reusable, it will remove a hell of a lot easier when you do decide to remove it.

I have used plain old grease on gaskets before. It does really make them easier to remove.

Do you use anything special on head and base gaskets? I used to use 1211.

1211 on base gasket for sure. not sure about head gaskets... i don't think i've ever installed one before... have only used o-ring heads.

Permatex made this spray copper coat stuff I used for years until my can run out. It made gaskets stick worse though. Sealed well on the other hand...

I use copper coat on all gaskets. Why try to reuse them when they are super cheap.

I wouldn't use anything that will add thickness to a base gasket like 1211. I put most on dry.

quality gaskets aren't that cheap...

i've been using grease on my bpipe head pipe gasket for years now and never once had a leak...

i've had two highly reputable engine builders tell me to always use 1211 on base gaskets. you only need a tiny layer which i believe would add barely anything thickness... maybe nanometers?

its nice to grease the bpipe headpipe gasket..it makes it allot easier to get the chamber in and out if the headpipe is loose when you do it

I have always thought the opposite. I always considered a sealant (like 1211 or grease) to be a "gasket for the gasket". If it happens to help the gasket come off easier, that's only a side benefit.

I dont use any grease or sealant on any gasket on a YAM engine build. Only 1211 on the cases. I like the gasket to seal onto the metal once it goes through some heat cycles. Who cares if its a bitch to get off, you know it was sealed on good...

Now if I'm in a pinch and had to reuse a gasket, then i would put some sealant on it. I did that to a SS B pipe head pipe gasket for years.
18 years of rebuilding all my motors and no leaks yet...

EDIT - I take that back... I always use 1211 or Yamabond on both sides of the flywheel cover gasket to insure that no water creeps in there.

I try to always use an OEM Yamaha exhaust manifold gasket. They use a heat activated glue. Good product!

That is exactly the reason you don't use sealant on gaskets. It is like stacking three gaskets together. Three different surfaces, three more places to leak.

I am just wondering what manual that info came out of,Haynes,Clymer? I know it wasn't a Yami or Kawi service manual,I am of the opinion if it comes off easier it does not seal as well nuff said.
