GTA Jet Pilots Revival Thread

Good morning gents. Had a good laugh this morning looking to insure my new ski

Harbour Insurance seems like a good candidate until I came across this line

Your engine is stock, with no modifications and not a stand-up model*

The search continues.

A friend had his under home insurance years ago, but that was probably just fire/theft at the house. I guess if anything happens you could always claim that someone broke into your garage and took it.

Update on my hull being stuck in the states - I got it shipped through Fedex Freight for $300 USD plus had to spend another $200 CAD on a broker. I picked it up from the Fedex terminal in Pickering, otherwise it would have been another $144 USD to have it dropped off at my house. I ended up paying HST, no duties. Not even a question. I just made sure the invoice said that it was sold to me and that it was made in Michigan. Overall, it was a kick in the teeth to pay that much when I could have picked it up myself for $40 in gas if the border was open, but shipping took only two days and everything went smooth.

Glad your got your hull @aboarder . What a PITA time to buy stuff

I lucked out thanks to @MikeMcDermid shipping with Manitoulin Transport for my XFS. 3 day shipping from Edmonton to Toronto for $247 canadian. I snagged some 3rd party cargo insurance for $75 and was thrilled with the process. Wish shipping skis from FL was so seamless. Gotta love domestic.

I tried Manitoulin because I heard they have good prices for hulls. They will only ship cross border for businesses. That turned out to be the case for several shipping companies. Lots of brokers work that way too. It really was a PITA.

Brian at Torrent just called a couple days ago to let me know my pump was ready. I hope I don't get hit too hard with broker fees.

Hi guys,

New to the forum and trying to find some info from other Canadians.I want to get into riding stand-ups, and unfortunately got the itch during the pandemic which makes things a bit more difficult. am looking to buy a new superjet. called a bunch of dealers in the states and the one that was actually interested in selling me one is all the way in the Seattle area. Now here comes the problem, he says he no longer has the shipping crate since the crate was opened and ski assembled ( crate returned) and if I organize shipping then we have a deal. I have tried a few shippers and most ask for it to be on a trailer, the rest ask for it to be crated. Got a few quotes for a crated ski approx. 900usd, but I have no crate . Do you guys have any experience with this trans border shipping? Any recommendations? Thanks

I’d be asking the dealer to build one, shouldn’t be too much of an ask if he is wanting to sell the machine, I’m sure he will charge for it aswell. I’d be looking for a good used machine up here though before buying a new one from the states. Your going to pay through the nose and resale on it will be tough to recoup any sort of costs. Just my 2 cents

Thanks for the reply. told them I’m willing to pay for the crate , haven’t heard back.
@jetx did try to find some a good used one but there are none or they are very old.
if you could find the name of the shop that’d be fantastic.

I just went through this with a hull. I ordered it before Covid and was planning on driving to MI to pick it up. That is impossible right now so I had to ship it. The shipping was $300 usd with FedEx Freight, but the additional fees are much worse. $200 for a broker. $500 taxes on import. You unfortunately will likely have to pay duties instead of just tax, because I don’t think they build those in North America.

I suggest buying from a Canadian dealer, or buy used. This is the unfortunate reality until the US gets their poop together and we can reopen the border.

Certainly a tough time to buy a ski, seems demand is increasing And supply is low. If you have money to burn than by all means bring a new one in from the states but I see that costing 15k cnd real fast. At that price point you would have much better value buying a used aftermarket ski. Your just going to have to be patient though in your search. You’ll get much better value buying a used ski...maybe even look in Quebec Lots of guys over there who ride and sell.

Thanks guys..dealer replied saying no crate and they won’t build one so that’s done with.yeah total cost would of been 15k including shipping, duty, taxes. looks like I have to wait for the border to open next year and hopefully Yamaha will still make a 2021 SJ. I have no idea about aftermarket hulls etc.. reading the parts list on some of the ads is like reading a foreign language lol. I do dirtbike and familiar with 2 strokes , not jet skis :(

Did find this though..

That looks more like a flat water freestyle ski. You probably wouldn't like it for any Lake Ontario surf with that short handle pole and short hull. I've never been a fan of bob hulls and for not particular reason lol. Some hulls just have a certain look to them that speaks to me while others don't. I used to run with a fella that had an early edition EME hull with the short pole like that and he was a tall guy. About 6'2. He seemed to like the short setup, for me having the handle pole short like that forces me to hunch over the ski all the time and it really takes a toll on the back and neck. I am most comfortable with a stock length or shortened by about 2" handle pole. Any more then that and it takes away from the fun...at least for me it does. If you can get yourself a decent SuperJet, that would be the ideal starting point. You will have the best success with anything between 1996 - 2007. Those were the years that they had the better steering capability. The 2008 to current models have a different setup for the jet pump, steering and bottom deck of the hull around the nose. A lot of peeps don't like that design because they say it has a much more lazy steering throw to it and rides a little differently but in a weird way. They're still a good ski but it seems the more sought after ones are the 96 - 07 models. From 96 to current they all have the same engine and electrical gear but most other parts are different from 2008 on.
