Hard boiled eggs w/ raw Horseradish! The symbols of life renewing. The ancient Zoroastrians painted eggs for Nowrooz, their New Year celebration, which falls in Spring. This tradition goes back over 2500 years and is the first use of Eggs in this celebration. Many other groups celebrated spring as a time of fertility, (Pagans, etc...)
Eostre was an ancient fertility Goddess. Legend has it that Eostre turned a dying bird into a Hare so that it could survive the winter. This Hare then laid eggs (once being a bird) and decorated them as a gift to Eostre. Around a thousand years later when the Christian celebration was formed around the same time period as Eostre, and with Christians taking over many countries, spreading (and sometimes forcing) Christianity on Pagans and others, the customs mixed giving us the Easter we know of today!
...Happy Easter to everyone!
