Hawaii Riders??

We are heading to Hawaii in April for vacation and was wondering if anyone here lives on Oahu? If so PM me, I would like to see about riding/renting a couple stand ups for a couple of hours. I would love to bring my SuperJet and SXR along but way too expensive.

I moved to Maui recently. I see skis for sale on craigslist every once and awhile.. If there was even a chance that I could ride the surf I would have already shipped my skis out. I just bought a boat so if I can find a spot that is boat assessable I will bring my skis out but I am not holding my breath. There are tons of other water related things to do. Enjoy Hawaii for what it offers, you will not be disappointed unless your a dick then most likely you will get punched in the face. Ha

I was recently in Kauai and saw several skis (all couches) parked out side of people houses. Didn't see a single person riding, but then why would they have them if they weren't allowed? My father in law lives there. I would totally buy a ski to have out there when I go. Definitely interested in hearing more info from anyone who can provide it. ThatGuy, just curious, what part of maui are you living on? I lived in paia for a little bit and then in haiku by the dakine factory for a little bit. wish I would have been able to make it out there. its so expensive.

They are allowed in the "thrill craft zone" or in the waves if you get your tow in certification. But there is no way that you would get away with taking one wave from a surfer here. Also good luck finding someone else to ride with.. After saying hi to the reef surfing I have mad respect for the guys from Tahiti. Big balls to get barreled on a reef break. I would be worried about lawn darts out the back side.

I can understand staying away from the surfers, but honestly when I was in Kauai for my limited visit, there were places where the surfers congregated, but plenty of other places where I didn't see a soul in the water. Maybe there were reasons (rip tide etc), but Kauai seemed to offer more beach seclusion than anywhere I ever saw in maui. Again, I say that with a very limited experience, but it was enough to intrigue me and want to know more.

ORMA - Ocean Recreation Management Areas. Pretty much every bit of water around Oahu is designated for different sports and the 4 'thrillcraft' zones back in the early-mid 90's when I lived there were far away from waves and you legally were supposed to travel either 5 or 10 knots to/from those areas. I got 2 tickets for violating the ORMAs in '94, one at Hawaii Kai (Maunalua Bay I think it's also called) and one on the North Shore. We ended up just riding at Hickam AFB most of the time---no surfers and an OK break even though it was kind of narrow.

Actually here's the map for Hawaii Kai, see the thin line of yellow that you can legally ride in, way outside the reef where the waves break?
