Head/Cylinder issues

No worries about that higher torque. A few of builders will tell you the 25 ain't enough.

I had mine rattle loose at 25ftlbs before.
I do the girdle nuts to 32, head bolts to 24.

wow.... really????

anyone think that's a bad idea???

The problem is the girdle studs. You need to torque them to 35 Ft Lbs. you need to consider the streach of a bolt that long. I have had issues with these bolts in the past. seems the material ADA gets can sometimes be of differant grades. I'm not saying it's ADA fault, but the material suppliers are not always forthcoming. A lesser grade material will streach when loaded & once the vibration takes over, it gets worse.

Going against the majority here the girdle bolts should have nothing to do with blowing head orings. I can see it causing issues with the base gasket but not the head gasket. The head should be held tight buy the head bolts. In the case of ada heads the girdle bolts hold the cylinder to the to cases and add extra support to the cylinder. If that were the case all none girdled oring heads would be blowing orings all the time.

Nobody said it had something to do with the Oring issue. I just brought it up as an FYI.

Charlie: Anything is better than the 25ftlbs.

When heads/domes are machined there should be a preload on the domes, the amount is so small that its easy for some heads to be off from new it only takes a small amount of swarf to get trapped during the set-up. Without very accurate measuring equipment it will be had to tell if the head or the dome is out, if its the head a tiny amount machined off the face will sort it and wont upset the o rings. I would say that as your dome has been vibrating around it stands a good chance this is the problem.

Here I was thinking of getting a new head to increase compression, after I read this, I dont know if I want the problems, or is this a rare thing to happen?

So Paul,

do you reccoment this ADA type of girdle kit or something else?

I have been looking into getting one and using it.

but if the other types of kits are better with factory studs in the cases, and coupling nuts, maybe I will reconsider this idea?

Thanks for your thoughts!

ive had nothing but problems with the coupling nut style girdle kits from riva. most everyone recommends ADA hardware.

I'm responding 17.5 years after the last post but my domes wore a ridge into the head allowing the domes to move upward, very frustrating but finally discovered why my O rings were blowing. I only got 20 years out of this ADA head. Just ordered a new ADA head. they are not that expensive.

Old thread for sure! But Look at us OG that are still here! Thats the scary part!

as for ADA head , there has been a revision years ago to reduce the wear you experienced.
I truly hope you have another 17.5 years of riding left in you to see if your new head outlast this old one!
keep Riding Brother! Love it!
