Do I need a new head gasket after removing the head or can I just use a permatex sealer and the old gasket?

You should change it, they're pretty cheap. And you'll know that there won't be any leaks.

Ya thats what I figured, not sure that $35 is cheap for a gasket though.

If its stock metal gaskets ,copper coat it. In an aerosal can. Just an option if you don't want to wait. Get it at auto parts store

The oem gasket has a heat activated brown sealant that the aftermarket gaskets don't have.fyi

I havent pulled the head yet but it appears that the current one has a grey type sealer used on it. Any idea what that could be?

Have not seen grey oem head gasket sealant except for yama bond for cases.

Since you don't know the history of it, replace it. If the gaskets had been used a season or so i would copper coat it, clean all the grey sealant off and replace the gaskets. ^^ x2. Yamabond the cases, grease on the seals. Never any thing else.

Depends on what type head gasket you have installed and what model engine but in most cases they should be replaced.
