Id wear a couple life jackets, How do these people even survive this crap. I would get confused under water and just die.

When are we going to see some stand ups in the line up at those places?

You can't ride waves like that unless you have access to the places that produce waves like that, and there's only a handful of places in the world that actually get waves that size. Even then its not that easy as a lot of things all have to come together to make it happen, like a big swell and calm conditions at the same time, a photographer to get the shot (no ones going to believe you with out pics) and like already mentioned you'd be competeing with the tow surfers who think they own the place. One more thing, unlike the surfers who lose a $600 surfboard when they wipe out, you will lose your $6000 ski.

I remember seeing a video and a few of the guys were riding Jaws I think. Some big wave off mexico.

Like already mentioned Jaws is in Hawaii (I don't know of any stand up jet ski vids made there. Maybe early Randy Laine?) and the big wave off of Mexico is Todos Santos Island. There are actually a couple of vids floating around the X of the ski trip to Todos Santos Island, one of them I made. You can see my vid here.

When we were there, it was only 12-15' with and occasional 18' set, (it can get up to 50') but it was sunny, perfect shape and no other surfers were there. We were actually so incredibly lucky to ride Todos Santos without any surfers out, I'm still knocking on wood! As a matter of fact I get wood just thinking about that trip. To catch Todos Santos Island even breaking without having to compete with 20 tow surf crews is an amazing feat in itself!

You guys should google teh Cortez Banks off of Cali...Massive waves about 100 miles off of San Diego that they surf. Just nuts.

I actually tried to put together a Cortex Bank Jet ski trip, but the logistics, and cost were a nightmare, so currently it's on the back burner. Cortex Bank is a sea mount located about 100 miles off shore of San Diego. A sea mount is an island that doesn't actually break the surface of the water. The shallowest part of the bank is about 6' deep. This is a huge navigational hazard for ships because of the risk of running aground, as no dry land is visible here, even though it's a 100 miles out to sea. Because there's no land to break the wind, it's usually a massive disorganized amass of whitewater breaking in the middle of the ocean, but when several factors come together, like a huge swell and no wind, the surf breaking on the mount can get enormous and break really clean. I have seen some incredible surfing videos when everything came together. Unfortunately, to catch it with clean glassy conditions is the hardest part, as there's not a lot of precise weather info for a spot a 100 mile out to sea, so you just have to be a pretty good amateur weather guy to call that one. As for the nightmare logistics, to make a trip out there, since it's so far out, you will need at minimum, 1. 10 friends crazy enough (or dumb enough) to actually commit to riding the spot when its big. 2. A couch with a full time rider for safety/rescue. 3. A full time photographer (or two) to catch the action. 4. A boat that can get you, your friends, all your skis, food and gas out there and back. 5. And last, all the riders, support guys, and the boat would have to be available to go at the drop of a hat with as little as 2-3 days notice pending the weather and surf forecast (Not worth going unless the weather and waves are going to cooperate) I spoke to the captain of the Oceanside 95, a 75' local fishing trawler if they would take a group of us out. We could fit at least 10 stand ups on the Oside 95. The captain quoted me $5000 for the trip (That was 2 years ago, gas is more now I'm sure.) So you're talking $7-8000 for a 3 day trip, which actually isn't all that bad if split between 10 guys. This would be a once in a lifetime opportunity, which I haven't given up on. Anybody want to commit????
