Helium in tires

So I always thought what if I ran helium in the tubes in my dirt bike. Probably would have no effect at all but it's a cool thought; take off from a jump and land on the other stide of the track haha. O SNAP, even better what if you ran it in those big @ss tires that mudders use on trucks?

helium molecules are so small, you would never be able to keep them in an innertube.

even delium tanks are never really sealed - the helium leaks out of them too.

ye but would it last long enough for one ride?

you can't even normally keep air in tubes anyway. You always loose a pound of air here or there.

I'm sure it would last long enough for a ride. maybe even a day or so.

but think about how much helium you would need to make even a negligible difference - you'd have to put monster truck sized tires on a kiddie sized 4-wheeler (not literally, but you get the picture)

It would take such a large amount (volume) of He to offset the weight of the m/c and rider that riding the m/c would be damm near impossible

Some of the racing teams use nitrogen in there tires because is does not expand when they're heated up from running and the tire pressure stay more consistent.

there's several places where anyone can go and get a nitrogen fill.

I think even Discount Tire Co was going to start offering it - for something like $10 per tire.

Have you seen the Mythbusters episode about helium in footballs supposedly making them fly further? It wasn't true because of there wasn't as much mass in the helium field ones compared to the normal ones.

U would lost some mass filling the tires with helium, but I doubt you'd notice.

Shawn in right. There is a "big push" for tire stores to buy nitrogen producing units. A few of the big names now make nitrogen systems.
I'm still not sold on the idea yet and feel the price of the units needs to come down before it is worth while intvestment for my customers. My company has installed at few for Costco stores. Going rate in the northeast is $10-12.50 per tire for nitrogen fill and comes with a green valve stem cap.

the helium actually made the ball go shorter. awesome show

Costco - that's who I was thinking of.

Thanks for the reminder!

I tried a mx tube full of helium a while back. Nothing happened.

We do run nitrogen in them, constant tire pressure. Not so noticeable on dirt, but on asphalt. It stays true.

I realize that it would take a lot of He, more than can fill the tire, to make a difference. I just thought it was funny to think if it actually did something. But if you have an old honda 3wheeler 110 you can actually ride it across water with those big bubble tires.
