Other Helmet & Crashing?

i only wear one in the ocean or if i decide to push my abilities in flat water. I was given a couple MX helmets and that's what i wear. Yes they're heavy but i prefer the safety factor of the DOT and snell ratings.

1) You don't need DOT or Snell approved for water.
2) Standard MX style are heavy, add water to the mix and you'll need a linebackers neck.
3) Standard MX style don't have vents for water to pass thru. Bail the wrong way at a good clip and that'll make your head turn into a scoop grate.
4) Lighter use helmets are fine enough, you just need good fitment & coverage (ears, face, head) and you're golden.

i use a mx helmet and have since 2000. my neck is fine. i have had it get ripped off 2 times in the last 12 years. that was one time in a cc race and i crashed at full speed and the strap wasnt tight my fault and freeriding with a high speed get off also. save my head many of times. its all beat up. i wont ride with out it.

I'd agree that helmets are key but I dont see it necessary for a $200 snell helmet for our sport. Most (keyword) injuries from our sport are light impacts with the head to the ski in which case a standard Downhill MTB helmet will be just fine.

1) You don't need DOT or Snell approved for water.

I've taken a ski to the head more than once. The two worst cases were a SJ thrown at me by a 10ft wave and the same 350lb SJ after I fell out of a +10ft fllip.
Maybe a cheap MTB helmet would have been fine, I don't know. I do know that I'm glad I wore a better helmet than that

my visor is long gone. i would rather a dot approved helmet then a not approved one. i have knocked myself silly with my mx helmet on i would hate to see what would of happened with a non dot one. you know birds do really fly around your head.lol

i would like to add i've received a concussion from riding, at the river. i couldn't tell you how as i don't remember about 5 hrs of that day.
but any helmet may have saved that issue. luckily i wasn't unconscious, just unaware.

I only ride flat water, and don't wear one unless I'm trying to push myself. Don't wear goggles ever, always more of a pain and just blurs your vision. And I took the visor off my helmet the instant I got it, I figured if I'd go to do a sub or something similar, the water would catch the visor and snap by neck backwards.

"Might as well not wear one at all" so much bad with comments like this. Might as well put diesel in it.

What happened to an once of pervention?

I have told friends repeated to out on a helmet when 'just cruzin' only to see them split their face open after sayin no to an offered helmet.

A helmet is part of my required gear like a lanyard or swimming trunks.

My visor is long gone in the Atlantic.

As far as the dot and snell, I am all for it. You can't put a price on safety. However, the downhill mountain bike helmet is still better than nothing. I've also bailed in hurricane bill surf that resulted in the ski hitting my helmet. I was wearing a dhmtb helmet at the time. Couldn't imagine not having a helmet at all!

There is no doubt that a mountain bike helmet is the cheapest way to go. But I wear it so that's an improvement for me because I have never been cautious. Go tell a mt bike guy he may as well not wear one, you might get laughed at.

My biggest fear is getting knocked out and not being able to upright my boat lol that would be horrible to sink it because I got knocked out.
