Custom/Hybrid Help me out with picking an Yami engine

Hey guys, I have a 750sx with some goodies, its fast, but down low its not so good. I want to keep my hull as I like it and Ive read up on the conversion from the kawi engine to a yami 701, and from what Ive read everyone that does it loves it. And Ive also been reading the differences between the 701 and the 760, and it has concluded that the 701 has a lot more punch down low, which I want, but the 760 has awesome mid-range, I will be riding mostly in the surf, so my main ? is what do people prefer in the surf the 701 or the 760.

Also im not looking to break the bank on this build, dont get me wrong I want to spend some cash but not looking to murder my wallet, So some advice for some mods that are the best bang for the buck, and still keep the engine reliable, id rather have a slower ski and be riding it than have a faster ski and be sitting on the shore wrenching.

thanks guys :bananalama:

if you are going to get a 760 it is going to need porting for that punch you want. So factor that into your cost. Also the stock 44's kinda suck on the 760, you are better off with a set of retail 44's.

A stock 62Tcases/61Xcylinder motor with a b pipe and a prop will put a nice big grin on your face, that is until you decide you need more power hahah. Its an addiction.

Keep an eye out in the classifieds for a motor. I have seen a few 61x/61x for sale recently for pretty cheap that were already ported. Something like that would be a nice platform to start out with.

And welcome to the X.

thanks for the reply, Ive read about the porting, what does this usually cost? and who does a good job?

as far as 62t/61x, ive seen this set-up a couple times and it seems popular, this is a 701 right, I still am trying to learn the lingo on the engine codes

62T/61X is what has come in the superjet since 1996. It is a dual carb 701 motor with the good cylinder for bottom end compared to others in stock form. makes 73 HP stock.

61X/61X is a single carb 701 which made 63 HP stock and came as a single carb. It is still a nice motor and I know a few guys who still run them. They make fine power, just not as much as you will make with a 62T with the same mods.

I had my 61X cylinder ported by team scream. I am very satisfied with it and the price was right. Send them an email or give them a phone call for a price quote. I can recommend that from personal experience.

There are other companies out there that do great work as well but I have not tried them. I.E. Jetworks, Lehr performance, Wamiltons, Blowsion, and others. Check a few of the motor building threads for more info.

Im thinking your best bet though, is to find someone who is upgrading around this time of year and get a motor they are growing out of. You can probably pick up a nice powerplant pretty cheap.

here are two from the classified section right now. Both 61X/61X motors but they are already ported which will save you some work/money.

this helps quite a bit, thanks a bunch

Heres what I would have done if I had to do it all over again. TEAM SCREAM all the way. No excuses, bs or stories. If you want to get out on the water and just ride a rediculously powerful ski get a team scream motor and do what chucky says for all other parts and you wont be tuning all the time. JM2C

I've owned a 750 single carb 40mm small pin engine and I've owned a 701 61x/61x with a 44mm carb. Both had FP pipes, total loss, high comp heads, swirl style props, bored nozzles, etc. IMO, when modded similarly, the two engines produce very similar power. I could ride the two ski's back to back and could barely tell the difference in power between them. However, the handling differences were huge. My recommendation is to stick with the 750 until you decide you want a SJ. If you want some extra grunt, either get it ported professionally and/or get total loss. Since the flywheel on total loss is so light, it really helps get the engine going.

edit - One other thing to consider is that SJ engine parts sell for more than 750 engine parts. That means if you are able to sell ALL of your 750 engine parts (that's a big IF) and you bought all the 701 parts, you're going to be in the hole and no better off in power. My advice is find a used digital total loss system for your 750 and see if that gives you what you want. You'll have to charge the battery regularly but the difference is amazing if you're looking for that bottom end punch. First time I pulled the throttle with total loss, I knew instantly that I'd never go back.

Fixed that for ya...

All kidding aside, these big engines are incredible but truthfully, alot more power than most need and can handle. A well ported standard bore is more than enough and won't break the bank, just do as mentioned and have a builder do it all or follow his instructions carefully and do it yourself...either way, the power is in the package, not the individual components.
