Custom/Hybrid Help me pick a hull

I'm about to be making a down payment on a am hull real soon here. Couple weeks. I ant decide what I want. I've never rode any am hull at all. No one up here rides enough that I know of.

I ride everything. Surf. Lake. River. I Have surf skis already. I have progressed enough that my hull is holding me back on flat water. Whatever ski I get it will have a basic 701 pakage. Pipe. Head. Carbs. A prop. And some steering. I won't throw a ton of money at the drivetrain.

At this point I am stuck with either a backie chan or a gen 3diy bob. I don't have a lot f money. 4k n a hull is a investment for me but I love riding. I am also considering used but probably not.

My concerns are going to be what is most all around. What is going to be the strongest. And who is going to handle me the best when something goes wrong. I live close enough to both builders I could show up in person. I will not be selling it. Ever. I don't sell things. I use them till they fall apart or I just stash them on the side. So resale value to me is moot.

I chase boats a lot. I will ride miles out in the lake sometimes. I also like to ride right at shore and just beat the snot out of the ski practicing. I want an all around hull but can't afford a super freak.

Id really like to be able to ride them both and get an idea for myself. I know I can learn to ride anything eventually. I just want a all around ski that can also do flips. For me it's not even about the flips as it is being able to get more pop out of the water and the pole placement.

If anyone has ideas or maybe could recommend other hulls I'd appreciate it. A gen 3diy bob would save me about a grand but if ats the cost of ride and quality I'd rather pay a bit more and be happy.

I used to chase boats with my chan. It is super stable for a small ski. It may be a little rough at first but you will get used to it. I even had a short rideplate on mine when chasing boats. I was able to flip mine with a 701 off a boat wake and could almost get them all the way around on a setup wake. I would recommend to get a surf layup if you go with a chan.

i rode a bob gen3, nice light ski, stable, and with different ride plates, good for all around. swap plates for your use. long plates for surf and boat chasing, shorty for flatwater flips. why dont you contact BOB and meet at one of there test ride days. I love their hull, but after riding one, i wont bother buying one. these hulls your talking about are made to flip. the bob i rode wanted to come around every chance it had. so if you want a good all around ski, a rockered cut back SJ is perfect. If you want a freestyle ski, a AM hull is your best bet. if I had to pick one, i would and will be building a "AM" hull myself from a SJ. i dont have the money for one, so ill make what will be an all around fun ski. for the most part, you have to pick a area of interest. if freestyle is 75%of your riding, then a bob or backie chan would work just fine, but take some getting used to.

Power isn't the problem with my riding. I'm at the limits of the hull. I can do everything it can do pretty much. I need shorter. Lighter. Wider. And rocker. That means aftermarket.

I want strong. I know Some of the chans had issues. You hear that about every hull if you read long enou tho. I would ask for a surf layup regardless which ski I got. I want something that is going to last. I ride a lot. I can only imagine riding even more with a am hull.

Well you should ride both backie chan and bob and see if you like it , i mean theyre driving distance from you . Im not knocking bob but ive seen a lot of bob for sale lately :/ on the other note if you really want a all around ski i think you should consider the aquabot

Man you live in Cali, go ride both! I spent $600 to fly to Daytona to try out a Chan before I bought because it was a big investment for me as well. I couldn't drop that much coin on a ski without being sure.

Everyone has has an opinion and preference.

FWIW, the Chan is a pretty solid ski. Lawmaster had a glass one with a 701 and was nosing in flips off his own wake, and it was new. I rode it, it's got a lot of pop.

But it I own a chan and have never been on a BOB. My opinion is slanted.

Seriously. Go. Ride. Both.

I'm buying a am hull because I can go a lot bigger than I am now. I can do everything but flip, and some of the old school tricks. A am hull makes it bigger. More air. Could prob go 2-3 times bigger with the rig hull and a ill more power than I have now.

I want to ride them. I'm not the kindmofmguy to just drive 2 hours to sac and ask some random stranger to ride his 10k ski tho. I will be contacting the makers of the hulls to see if I can ride them but I do not know if that will be possible. There are certain riders on here that have good opinio s and have rode everything under the sun.

I know a am hul, won't be the best ski to ride around the lake. I just want one that won't beat me up doing it. I really don't want a ski that's goi to ride super nose high either. I have done quite a bit of reading. And do more every ight. Thanks for the replies

Will you need to buy materials to finish the diy Bob? Will you need to buy turf? Hood seal? Plus all the time and energy getting everything lined up 100% right. What may seem like it will save you money might come out closer than you think in the long run. I owned a Bob Gen 1 when they came out (number 7 or 8 I think) and had many issues, from having to drill through the hull before assembly to fix am insert to re glassing the hood liner after it cracked all the way across. The ski clinic was new and had good customer service to help me fix the problems but I was always worried when riding that something else would break.

The second time around I decided I needed to ride whatever hull I was going to buy. I drove down to Oregon to try the Rok-r before the long ride plate was available and it was fun just not for me. Then I started talking with Steve (about a cheap rok-r he was selling) and found out he was building a ski that sounded like exactly what I wanted, so when the demo was done I flew down and hung out with them and rode the first chan. They were cool guys and I loved the hull. If it breaks he stands behind his work and builds you a new hull, not just a repair kit, which is awesome. I got the second carbon kevlar chan and it has held up great.

I really need to win the lottery so I can buy a Circus, hurricane, dvx, and maybe some rickters, haha I want one of each.

My suggestion would be to go ride them and add up everything it will take to get both built (can add up quick) before making your decision.

Good luck man!

I don't think either hulls are going to limit you to anything. I chase boats on my blob and Pablo chases boats on his chan. I can nose in flips, so can Pablo. Flat spins, same story. We don't try rolls. Lol. Sketchy to me Both limited setups like you're talking, it's really just going to your personal knit picking between the two I think. I will say the chan has AWESOME recovery ability when you don't land quite so perfect. Like swappydoo said, gotta ride em.

After alot of reading and thinking I'm pretty set on going with a backie chan. I talked with Steve and dude seems legit for the couple minutes I talked to him. I am going to try and make it down there next weekend to test ride one and if I like it, put a down payment down. Hopefully all goes well
