Other Help needed - 66E assembly

Finally got all the parts in to reassemble the XL800 for my boss, but ran across a problem this morning.

There's a washer that goes on either side of the wrist pin bearing. When I broke down the rear cylinder, I did not see the washers so I assumed they were missing/destroyed.

Today, I broke down the front cylinder to inspect it and replace the rings. Both washers were there.

So I started looking at the rear part of the case and saw one of the washers had fallen down into the crank area...so at least one of them is down there and I'm not sure where the other one is. I tried to fish out the washer, but I can't see it or reach it - but I know it's there.

short of removing the engine and cracking open the cases - is there something else I can do to try to retrieve that washer?

You could remove the engine and open the cases.

try blasting air in there from your compressor... or maybe a magnet on a stick

I would try to rock the boat .( HA ) to move the washer slightly and then try to remove the washer with a pick tool or a stick magnet , if you cant dislodge the washer , then you have to pull the motor .

I have done this a few times, luckily I played alot of operation as a kid .. but if your taking off pistons in the future, wrap a towel or rag around the rod/case/crank area so that if a washer falls out it wont end up inside the motor.

i got a washer out just now - was stuck to the back side of the crank web.

I wonder if the other one is still there?

the piston was chewed to hell (but no other apparent damage to the head or cases) when I took it apart - so I wonder if that is what destroyed the piston & cylinder wall.

you willing to bet the motor on it?

air and or a magnet. I have a telescoping one the size of a pen. even has a nifty little collar on it to keep it from sticking to everything. you can pull the sleeve back to expose the whole end but then you have to play keep away from the crank. what can I say? it keeps things interesting.

I bet I got everything our of the case once and was wrong. The motor ran terribly for less than 10 seconds and I wasted a top end and head.

i went through the trouble of pulling one out once and found it stuck to the starter
use a nagnet and fish around you will find it
