Help setting up first Total Loss on my first new build

I have a rickter edge I am building and it is time to set up the total loss. For those wondering it will have a php780 with 175 psi, tnt v2 pipe, 48mm novis, and run pump fuel.

The TL is all wired. Now time to set the timing. I will be running 30 degrees of static timing.

First off this is my first new build. There are many things I am encountering for the first time. This will be my plan. Any thoughts and feedback will be much appreciated. I will also buy beers for anyone who responds if I ever see you irl.

-install starter motor(with silicone)
-install bendix gear
-install wodruf key on crank shaft
-boil flywheel for 5 minutes
-install fly wheel and fasten with flywheel bolt (anyone find the msd fittment with flywheel and wodruf key is abnormally tight? When dry fitting it i am no where close to getting the flywheel down. Should I use the flywheel bolt to help get it seated?)
-find TDC and Mark case and flywheel
-advance flywheel to 30 degrees clockwise
-loosen pickup plate
-rotate pickup plate until led lights up
-tighten pickup plate
- install bendix spring and flywheel cover

Am I missing anything? I swear I am not dumb but the msd manual made me feel stupid.

Thanks again for any feedback.

I know MSD manual says this, i have never done it though, and have had installed 6-7 systems, and had my own flywheel on/off 20+ times. Never came loose.
-install fly wheel and fasten with flywheel bolt (anyone find the msd fittment with flywheel and wodruf key is abnormally tight?
I dont know if the fit is tighter on the new flywheels. My 2011 one, is not tight - and comes on pretty easy
When dry fitting it i am no where close to getting the flywheel down. Should I use the flywheel bolt to help get it seated?)
I would say you should get the flywheel on 97% without bolting it down.

-find TDC and Mark case and flywheel
You can use a bit of solid copper wire or so, to use as pointer to TDC on flywheel (this i find, works better than a mark on the cases)
-advance flywheel to 30 degrees clockwise
-loosen pickup plate
-rotate pickup plate until led lights up
-tighten pickup plate

I donna if its possible to do it that way. set the pickup plate in a spot, rotate flywheel and read when the LED comes on. eks 20deg BTDC.
Thenpull flywheel off, advance pick up plate, until it sits (and LED comes on) at 30 deg BTDC.
Then bolt down with a drop of blue loctite

- install bendix spring and flywheel cover

Am I missing anything? I swear I am not dumb but the msd manual made me feel stupid.

Thanks again for any feedback.

Hope this was any good, otherwise just ask :)

Do you have a lightened msd flywheel or not? I find tdc and use a dial indicator in the spark plug hole. I use a piston position calculator to determine were the light on the msd should come on

Thank you all for the responses. I hope I can buy you all a beer one day.

I have the msd flywheel. Bought it brand new. When I get home from work I will try to figure out the fitment issues I am having with the wodruf key.

I will probably go the timing light route. Just out of curiosity can you explain more on how you set your timing using a piston position calculator? It make sense in theory but I can't wrap my head about how to do it accurately.

This is the one I use.

I’m not going to use your motor but I’ll use XScream 900r as an example with 78mm stroke and 133mm rods since I don’t know what rod length he used on your motor. I would assume stock but idk.
Just input your stroke, rod length and desired piston position into the calculator

It will spit out a number in mm. This particular one is 6.662mm. Convert that number to inches and you get .262”

Next find and zero the dial gauge at tdc. Position the pickup plate as to where the light on the msd module first lights up when the dial gauge reads .262” before tdc. It takes a few times to get it right if you don’t have a lightened msd flywheel. When using a lightened one you can adjust your pickup plate position with the flywheel installed.

I hope this makes more since to you
