Super Jet HELP - stripped pole mounting bolts

oxnard111

Creative RE Purchasing
Un clip start/stop switch wires inside engine compartment.

Disconnect throttle cable from throttle.

Discontent stressing cable from steering plate and from clip where it gets held into the pole

S/S switch stays with pole, steering and throttle stay with ski.

Did you cut the heads of the bolts off? Is there any meat left on them to grab with vice grips? Heat that bracket up and turn the bolts with vice grips if you can.

thanks guys.

there is a good amount of stub left on each bolt that was cut off, probably 3/4 inch. the plan will be to flatten two or more sides with a dremel to get a good hold with vice grips or channel locks, then heat the aluminum and twist as hard as possible.

I was hoping to do this by just taking of the triangle parts from the pole mount bracket and leaving the pole and wires/cables with the ski. But, since there is the other bolts in it holding the triangles to the base, I have to either find a way to get them loose, or pull the pole and cables.

I am thinking that it might just be easier to forget the triangles and just pull the whole bracket off and deal will it as one piece. However, now thinking about it more as I type this, I won't have as much stub left on the cut off bolts to work with if the base plate (sandwiched between triangles and hull) is still on. Does this makes sense? By removing the base plate from the triangles, I would expose a lot of extra bolt stub as the bolts are not threaded within the base plate.

below is a pic. the two triangles are held by other bolts to the base, but, aside from these bolts, the triangles should come off the base. Since the base is 3/4 inch thick, this would expose a lot of stub to work with.

well, the job is done.

we pulled the pole and cables and left the triangle attached and had enough stubs left to grip. we tried to remove the allen head bolts that were holding the triangles on, but they were siezed too, so we just said forget it because enough stub was sticking out to work with.

to get the bolts out we:

put the bracket upside down in the vice
heated each bolt with a blowtorch and then sprayed them with penetrating oil (liquid wrench) while they were hot, it did seem that they sucked in the oil while hot
flattened two sides of the studs to give a gripping surface
twisted them out with vice grips

replaced bolts with standard hex head bolts with grease on them so hopefully will not have to endure this again.

funny thing is, this whole ordeal started because I was trying to mount a little bracket on the pole pin to mount my gopro. after all this we decided it wasn't feasible and we are going to drill holes in the hull to mount it. pretty much 3 days work for nothing. although, now I know how to remove a pole, and am better equipped to deal with siezed bolts...

pics of the bolts are below

thanks again to everyone for their help and suggestions
