Holsters

I got a galco shoulder holster along with my g22. What are your guys thoughts on shoulder holsters? Obviously jackets are the best for them but what about hooded?

I haven't used a shoulder holster but I really like my White Hat iwb holster. I also have an all kydex holster from stature man and that is also a nice less expensive piece.

Horizontal shoulder holsters are dangerous.
You muzzle sweep everyone behind you all the time.
Horizontal is OK, just wear a jacket or vest

Buy the best holster you can. Usually the big-brand, mass-produced holsters are not very nice. This holster is something that you'll have on you a significant amount of time, carrying something very important. Don't skimp here because you will regret it. The most common complaints I've heard friends express about carrying was being uncomfortable. What a surprise with a $25 plastic toy holster!

I've had custom ones made for a couple of 1911's by Milt Sparks in Idaho. They took approximately 5-6 months to receive from the time I ordered them. And it was absolutely well worth it.

Now, type of holster? I've tried shoulder holsters and didn't like them personally. When I was carrying regularly a few years ago - not anymore - I always preferred IWB holsters. You can easily carry a full-sized 1911 that way. The only way this doesn't work is if you're fat and can't fit anything between the belt and your ass.

THIS^^^^

I spent over $150 on 3-4 different mass produced holsters and never cared for any of them. I can't express how much I dislike Kydex holsters. To me, they are noisy and ruin the finish on your weapon.

Finally I spent $100 on a good quality horse hide leather holster from a guy who is about 1 hour from here. I got it in about 3 weeks. He custom makes everything himself.
Here is his site.http://www.dmbullardleather.com/
I'm not saying "Buy from this guy he's the best!" But it at least gives you some perspective on what a custom holster can look like/ cost.

I'm a IWB guy also.

I have been looking at the crossbreed super tuck. Any opinions? Are there holsters that are leather that can take that form fitting shape like the kydex?

Opinions on J hooks or v clips?

?????? not trying to be a di46 I just know nothing about shoulder holsters, I assume you mean vertical?

Sorry, yes drain bamage, I meant vertical shoulder holsters where the muzzle is pointed at the ground are good
horizontal ones point at everything behind you. not good.

I use a MTAC Minotaur with my Shield and like it, l prefer the J hooks as they hide under your belt better. Like anything, it's all preference. I'm with Swapmeet on the Kydex, but it works with this holster.

MTAC for me but a number of friends with crossbreed, either is a quality choice. Plan to mess with the cant and location around your waist until it settles in, then it feels so good you will miss it if you don't have it.
Your body heat will form the leather around the gun some so plan to tighten the screws as it forms, I was also told that it can take 500 draws to break in a holster so its smooth drawing and snug.
I played indoor soccer one time and never was concerned about retention.
Stay safe!

I don't have a good pic, but my the DMbullard holster I mentioned above is made around a metal (aluminum?) casting of a 4" 1911 (what I carry) so when you look inside the holster, you can see all the details of the gun embossed into the leather. Probably uses a mallet.

Those impressions etc allow the gun to sort of click or semi lock into place.
Food for thought.

As far as hooks, I like the metal clip over the belt kind. If I'm carrying, I have a long shirt untucked or a coat to conceal, so if someone sees a few metal clips on my belt when I bend down or something.. Who cares. As long as my pistol doesn't peek out, I'm good.

Sweet. Why is everyone concerned about the finish on the gun?

Because guns are expensive and I'd like it to look nice if I ever decide to sell it. That's how I feel anyway.

Think of it like your old lady keeping the shrub trimmed. It's not for everyone to appreciate, but when the person who is supposed to see it sees it... You want it to look nice.

Mine is polished through a number of places. But that is what will happen after 8 to 10 years of carrying and training with it. I was concerned as well for a few months but then figured its a tool, an important tool, and some wear is just fine.
On the MTAC or crossbreed your body heat will finish the molding of the leather.
Like swap meet said the embossing or impressions will kind of help it lock in. The MTAC has a nub that clicks on the trigger guard.

I don't treat my tools like poop - if I can avoid marring the finish, then I will.
Don't go to a class like Tactical response or others then. First off youre throwing your tool on the ground. Mine have all hit the ground intentionally for trust. To each there own though. I don't feel I abuse them. I wanna know my equipment work after a bump. Some think I'm dumb for doing things like this, I think you are ill informed about your tool if ya don't push it. And why don't you all have DS arms FAL's lol. For holsters, different ones for different situations imo regarding a retention need. Yall have fun
