Super Jet holy coupler!! it's really stuck

I'm trying to remove a kawi style coupler on this engine so I can put my cold fusion coupler on there but OMG this thing is on there. I tried my usual wrench through the coupler and some brute force. When that didn't work I went to my next method of heating the coupler and a longer wrench. That has always worked on stubborned couplers but not even a budge on this one.

My last resort was to put the bedplate under a ledge and bounce on the wrench. Nothing.... I'm at a loss. I'm pretty sure I have to pull the coupler now because the crank seal appeared to be bubbling around the crank. I know not to heat the coupler from the seal side but apparently enough heat transferred to the seal anyway. I'm putting far more torque on this thing than any impact wrench within reason can put out but still nothing.

Ideas????

How are you locking the motor? I have a cold fusion flywheel holder if you need it. I also have a monster pipe wrench that I used on mine. It's like two feet long.

I may have to borrow that flywheel holder. I'm afraid I'm going to/already have bent a rod with the rope trick. At the same time, I'm a little worried about stripping my flywheel with the flywheel holder. Maybe I'll use the 61x flywheel I have laying around...

Torch the coupler while icing the crank. Do this a few times.

How do you ice the crank? I could potentially ice the journal but I can't see that having much effect.

I take a couple of ice cubes and put them right behind the coupler. The idea is to expand/contract the thread union a few times to break it lose. I had a Yamaha 1100 coupler stock on REALLY bad this past summer. So bad in fact that even when I put on a six foot pipe it wouldn't break lose.
I did the heat/ice trick about three or four times and it finally came off.

I wish I could do that. I've done that to stubborned midshafts but this coupler nearly touches the crank seal so I can't get ice on it. I guess one alternative would be to place the entire engine in the frig for a few hours and then immediately torch the coupler.

The frig and heat worked out. I also used a receiver hitch without the ball in the coupler and put a pipe inside of that to give me a good 3 feet of leverage. I did a quick pressure check and wiggled the crank during the test and the seal appears to have held up. I'll check the crank tomorrow. Thanks guys.

Man can you just imagine if I was married and my wife opened up the frig and saw an engine in there... That would be awesome!! lol

Thats funny John! If Jon Hall and I lived together by ourselves, there is no telling what would be laying around the house.

Wow that is some effort ! I know a guy that uses 1100 foot pounds in reverse impact wrench with 160 psi air and a welded/beefed up coupler tool...he is a maniac in the garage and unstoppable...

I use a 2 foot prybar and a 3 foot pipe slid over it now with no heat and pull em off. they pop like a flywheel. then spin by hand. You should be using a bunch of marine grease or anti seize when you put it on the motor to prevent this.

If you are replacing the coupler, why not a sawz-all?
I ended up drilling holes in one on a 750 motor and
using a cutoff wheel to break it off.

i used a 36 inch pipe wrench and flywheel holder it was a bitch to get it off i did not use heat i did not want to ruin seals, if you dont want to save coupler use a dremmel and make a slice along the coupler dont go to far so you touch the threaded crank , i am a pipe fitter by trade i use these tatics when i cant heat up things you can rent a 36 inch pipe wrench from home depot real cheap for 4 hours good luck

So I pulled my coupler today... tearing my motor down for a topend and crank seals.. First time since '94 it has been off.. A little Aero-Kroil and my crack torch around the outside of the crank threads, another squirt of Aero-Kroil on both sides, stuck my 18" Strap-On er.. Snap-on prybar across 2 fingers and WHALAH... Came right off! Couldn't have been happier or more excited it went so easy!!
